Architectural Security
With over 30 years of experience in physical security, Ross offers the design and construction community a great deal of knowledge. Our resume includes hundreds of US Embassies, Consulates and a multitude of international government and commercial projects on six different continents. In addition, Ross has held the US Department of State’s Government Provided Equipment (GPE) contract for FE/BR windows since 2005.

As such, we have a strong understanding of the diverse industry standards used to establish security threat levels and product certification requirements. Ross offers architects and engineers extensive support for key project design elements such as engineering for combined threats, integration with adjoining construction materials and customization for non-standard shapes, sizes and finishes.

Our factories are well equipped with a broad range of manufacturing equipment, which allows us to handle the vast majority of fabrication processes in-house and provides us with real control over product quality and lead times.

Ross is ISO 9001:2008 certified. And as part of our pledge to quality assurance, we put every piece of equipment under extensive Factory Acceptance Testing prior to shipping. This testing process involves assembling, running and labeling all components including wiring harnesses, hydraulics and controls. This helps ensure simple and efficient installation in the field. We encourage all of our customers to attend this testing for training and final systems verification.

Aluminum Forced Entry / Ballistic Resistant (FE/BR) Windows deliver DOS certified protection against mob-level forced-entry attacks and rifle-level ballistic threats in a complete system designed for energy efficiency and modern architectural appeal. Available in a wide variety of performance ratings for both fixed and teller window applications, they can also be engineered to resist significant blast loads with a "no hazard" rating. Ross aluminum window designs utilize high strength aluminum alloy components for durability and a thermally broken frame with industry leading U-values and condensation resistance.

Design Features

Tested to Department of State Standard SD-STD-01.01 Rev. G (Amended), Ross Aluminum FE/BR Windows offer an ideal solution where the call for high ballistic and forced-entry resistance competes with targets for design excellence. The WAFV-05 and WAFV-15R all-aluminum, fixed designs are tested and certified to withstand simulated "mob" attack for 5 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. The WAFV-15R is also resistant to 5.56 M193 & M855 and 7.62 M80 ballistic rounds. Both models can be engineered to resist blast loads up to 40 psi / 300 psi-ms and beyond.

Fabricated as a complete system, typical construction includes a heavy-duty thermally broken aluminum frame, laminated/insulated glazing, glazing stops, ballistic protection bars, interior/exterior trim and a plate or tube-type sub-frame. An optional FE/BR deal tray can be added for high-security document transfer needs. Ross DOS certified Deal Tray offers 15 minutes of forced-entry and ballistic protection, and its 2" deep stainless steel transaction tray provides ample room for the passage of 100+ sheet documents.

All windows are factory glazed and can be installed as a single unit or ganged together to form a unitized "window wall." Numerous glazing options are available along with snap-on interior and exterior trims, which improve installation flexibility and come in a wide range of finish types. Shallow mount wedge barriers are among the most versatile physical security products on the market because of their compact footprint and robust design. They provide maximum security for high-threat locations - especially those with potential high-speed impact conditions, limited response times and minimal property setbacks. Having successfully completed US Department of State durability cycle testing, the XT-1000 Shallow Mount Wedge Barrier's rugged construction and robust operating system make it ideal for guarding entrances in the most demanding environments.

Design Features

The XT-1000 is comprised of a high-quality, structural steel frame and plate that, when raised, creates a wedge-shaped barricade to seal off roadways and prevent vehicle access. The wedge design is very popular because it effectively transfers high impact loads into a relatively compact foundation. The XT-1000 requires a 20-inch excavation depth and is flush mounted with the road surface. A custom-engineered hydraulic power unit (HPU) housed in an above-ground control enclosure activates the barricade, lifting the plate in 4 seconds for normal operation and 1.5 seconds in Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) mode.

This shallow mount barrier is available with numerous equipment options for managing operation including control consoles, traffic equipment, safety loops and environmental controls. Because all of the equipment is near ground level, this barrier is easy to maintain. The XT-1000 is ideal for the following conditions:
  • High-speed impacts where the roadway layout allows vehicles to reach higher speeds

Yet remarkably, the XT-2000 only requires 16-inch (400 mm) deep excavation and 3 cubic yards of concrete, which shortens installation time and reduces cost. A hydraulic power unit (HPU) housed in an above-ground NEMA-rated control enclosure activates the barricade, lifting the plate in 5 seconds for normal operation and 1.5 seconds in Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) mode.

Featuring the same heavy-duty operating components and galvanized finish as Ross's XT-1000 Wedge Barrier, it can easily handle high-traffic entrances while providing years of reliable service.

Design Features

The Ross XS-2000 Portable Plate Barrier comprises a solid steel base with an integral crash plate that, when raised, acts as a barricade to prevent vehicle access. The unit sits on top of the road surface with no foundation or other anchors required*. And unlike mobile barrierstrailer-mounted units with wheelsportable barriers are designed to give the look and feel of a permanent barrier for a stronger visual deterrent.

Buttresses at each end of the barrier house the hydraulic power unit (HPU) and controls. Power can be supplied from a local source, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS), optional solar panels, or any combination thereof. The unit is operated using a standard tethered control pendant or through options such as a wireless remote control, card readers, key switches, or local guard booth control consoles. Normal operation time to raise the plate is 3 seconds.

Because it requires no foundation and is available with multiple options for remote operation, the XS-2000 is ideal for virtually anywhere temporary security is needed, and is particularly suited for:

The rolling gate design features tandem trolley V-groove wheel assemblies that glide smoothly along an above-grade V-track. Design Features

The XL-501 Post and Beam Anti-Ram Fence was engineered to be extremely simple and efficient in terms of the materials required to arrest vehicle impact and the effort required for construction. In fact, each fence section is made up of a surprisingly small number of components (1) nut and bolt assembly, (2) posts, (1) top cap, (10) rebar sticks and shim plates (as needed).

Constructed from heavy-duty structural steel, this unique system utilizes a single tubular beam with patent-pending, energy-absorbing technology that enables the vertical posts to be set on 30-foot centers. This design feature eliminates the need for multiple intermediate posts and cable runs used in traditional anti-ram fence products. The top cap secures the horizontal crash beam and protects the post from the elements. It is secured with a single nut and bolt. The rebar (supplied by Ross) is installed directly into posts; separate rebar cages are not required.

Design Features

The Ross Anti-Ram Gate utilizes a structural steel tube beam engineered to travel vertically between two bollard-like posts, which perpetually anchor the beam at either end. When lowered, this cross member is housed in an unobtrusive channel and shallow foundation extending across the roadway. The efficient motion of this gate design reduces the travel distance required for the barrier to open and close compared to drop-arm gates, which pivot from one end post in a long arcing motion. This feature serves to significantly decrease the cycle time required to process vehicles and eliminates potential clearance issues with overhead objects such as trees, buildings or utilities. Normal operating time is accomplished in a mere 3 5 seconds.

When selecting anti-ram products that cannot obstruct the flow of pedestrian traffic, retractable bollards are the ideal barrier of choice. Retractable bollards can be designed to be aesthetically pleasing and blend into their surroundings to downplay the presence of security equipment. Having successfully completed US Department of State durability cycle testing, the XT-1200 Series Bollards' rugged construction and robust operating system make them suitable for guarding entrances in the most demanding environments.

Design Features

Ross Retractable Bollards consist of an array of three units, typically spaced on 36-inch centers. These arrays can be joined with additional groups, making them a cost effective solution for wider entrances. When deployed, XT-1200 Series Bollards extend a full 40 inches (1016 mm) high for maximum protection, which exceeds the long-used industry standard of 36 inches. In the retracted position, they're nearly invisible with only the top covers and road plates exposed. Each bollard is manufactured from durable 10-3/4 inch structural steel pipe and finished with a heavy-duty galvanized coating for corrosion resistance. Various paint finishes or cast stainless steel, aluminum and bronze sleeves are available to achieve specific aesthetic requirements.

The controls and operating components can be set to activate bollards individually or in groups*. A custom-engineered Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) housed in an above-ground NEMA-rated control enclosure activates the bollards, lifting the units in 5 seconds during normal operation and 2 seconds in Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) mode. While there is no limit to the number of bollards that can be installed in an entrance, they are typically operated in groups of up to four units per HPU.

In a class by itself, the XT-2200 Retractable Bollard combines the anti-ram security and compact design attributes of a shallow mount wedge barrier with the versatility and style of a bollard. The Raptor calls for a mere 20-inch (500 mm) excavation depth, making it ideal for site conditions that prohibit deep foundation pits, such as those required for standard bollards. Even more amazing is that the Raptor was tested as a single unit, so it can be used either as a standalone element or in an array of bollards to secure openings of virtually any width.

Design Features

The XT-2200 Raptor Retractable Bollard is a shallow mount curved bollard that, when deployed, extends 39 inches (985 mm) above grade. The foundation requires only 3 cubic yards of concrete and is very compact at just 20 inches (500 mm) deep by 69 inches (1750 mm) wide by 110 inches (2800 mm) long. The curved element rolls on six heavy-duty wheels with sealed bearings and steel inner cores to provide smooth and quiet operation. When retracted, there are no protruding obstructions or hinged joints to present a tripping hazard for pedestrians or to damage vehicles.

The Raptor is raised and lowered with a double-acting hydraulic cylinder for long-term reliability. Normal operation cycle time is 5 seconds and Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) cycle time mode is 1.5 seconds. A push button interface or optional Heald Hydra System controls the unit. It can also be operated by any access control equipment or manually with a hand pump. The Raptor is ideal for the following conditions:

The Matador Surface Mount Automated Bollard system is the only one of its kind. It offers many of the same architectural design benefits of retractable bollards, but without the need to excavate and pour a foundation. Plus, the Matador can be used where site restrictions limit or prohibit excavation, which is common in many cities. Design Features

The Matador Surface Mount Automated Bollard System is available as a three-bollard (XT-2300) or four-bollard (XT-2400) array. It consists of one or two sliding bollards that, when activated, slide behind stationary bollards located on either side. The Matador can be surface mounted with bolts for rapid deployment or recessed into a new or existing foundation to eliminate uneven transitions in the roadway surface.
