Overview:
Turncraft Columns are the choice of so many architects and builders for both exterior and interior applications because they feature thoughtful product design, fine workmanship, superior assembly, precision turning and fluting, and artful finishing. Available with true architectural entasis in sizes and styles consistent with the classic proportions of the Greek Doric, Tuscan, Roman Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian Orders - or custom turned to any specification and size up to 36" in diameter and 30' in height. Matching square columns and pilasters round out the complete product package.
Long known for its product line of Wood Colonial Columns and turned Wood Porch Posts, Turncraft has now become a leader in advanced material construction products. Now homeowners, commercial builders, and residential contractors can enjoy the traditional aesthetics of architecturally proportioned columns with the low maintenance benefits offered only by cutting edge rotocast fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) in its line of Poly-Classic Columns, and fiberglass/composites in its Fibracraft Columns. Recent product additions utilize expanded cellular PVC in its Craftsman Series Columns, and vinyl covered wood/polymer blends in its Composite Railing system. Turncraft continues as an industry leader in distinctive soft and hardwood stair components.

Poly-Classic®
|
Poly-Classic Columns are architecturally proportioned from rotocast fiberglass-reinforced polymer—the most advanced construction material in the world—so pound for pound they’re stronger than concrete, steel, or aluminum.
With the feel and durability of natural stone, Poly-Classic Columns are available in popular tapered and non-tapered shafts that feature concise edges and meticulous attention to detail. Their hollow centers are useful as channels for downspouts, wiring, and plumbing, yet Poly-Classic Columns offer maximum load-bearing capacities and substantial resistance to deformation.

Poly-Classic®

Poly-Classic® Craftsman Series Column panels are not prone to the same environmental damage as real wood, like splitting or cracking. Their E-Z Lock joints will not separate due to disproportionate changes in panel dimensions common to wooden Craftsman columns. With two coats of acrylic latex paint, Poly-Classic® Craftsman Series Columns will deliver years of service as promised by their Limited Lifetime Warranty against rot, corrosion, and moisture damage.

Turncraft Wood Colonial Columns begin with the milling of finger-jointed or solid staves to exacting dimensions. The staves are then assembled into a raw shaft using the strongest Type-I waterproof glue. Torque bands are wrapped around the shaft applying 90 to 100 pounds of pressure per square inch, transforming the individual staves into a single unit, ready for precision turning.
Wood Colonial Columns can be custom-fluted for any height at no extra cost, and are available in tapered and non-tapered shafts that feature concise edges and meticulous attention to detail—delivering natural beauty to most any project.

The distinguishing characteristics of the Greek Doric Order is the absence of a base, and the height of the column in ratio to its diameter. When used in true architectural proportions, the height of the column, including capital, is five and one-half diameters. Normally fluted, the Greek Doric has 20 flutes, with no fillets, so the flutes come to a peak. The depth of the flute is approximately 1/6 of the flute width. Greek Doric columns in antiquity are found on the Parthenon in Athens.

The distinguishing characteristic of the Tuscan Order is simplicity. Seldom fluted, the minimal mouldings and stylishly clean lines provide a robust appearance. When used in true architectural proportions, the height of the column, including capital and base, is seven diameters. Tuscan columns in antiquity are found on the Temple of Piety in Rome.

The Roman Doric order features an increase of decorative moldings over the Tuscan Order. Vignola’s Denticulated Doric Cap has a stepped, three-fillet support of the echinus instead of the single-fillet support of the Tuscan Order. The Doric base is similar to the Tuscan, but the addition of bead above the torus molding is an elegant embellishment.

The distinguishing features of the Ionic Order are the scrolls that decorate the capital of the column. These scrolls derived their intriguing shape from the shell of the Nautilus. The most common representations of the Ionic Order include columns with 24 flutes separated by fillets that are about one-third their width. Ionic shafts are placed on decorative Attic Bases.

Columns of the Corinthian Order are crowned with an inverted bell-shaped capital. The capital is richly adorned with Acanthus leaves. This column is almost always fluted. Like the Ionic, the Corinthian column exhibits 24 flutes and an Attic Base. The height of Corinthian columns, including capital and base, is typically ten diameters.
