Terrazzo is a composite material poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured, ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.

Terrazzo was originally created in Italy over 1500 hundred years ago by Venetian workers searching for a way to use discarded marble remnants – making it one of the world’s first “green” flooring system! In keeping with its original premise of recycle/reuse, today’s terrazzo installations combine exceptional beauty, extreme design flexibility, durability to last the life of the building, and incredible ease of maintenance with the best practices of sustainable building. Terrazzo has long been valued for its life cycle characteristics, and can also contribute to the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) credits for new construction.

Terrazzo Color Palette and Formulations

The selection of Designer (D) and Exotic (EX) formulations are available only with the use of a resinous (Epoxy) binder. Standard (S) formulations are available in either resinous or cementitious binders. Venetian (V) and Rustic (R) examples primarily use a cementitious binder. Being that Designer and Exotic formulations incorporate the use of specialty aggregates, an increase in cost should be expected when compared to the Standard formulations. Use of “Special Finish” techniques, designated by “SF,” will also result in an increased cost. The NTMA recommends 120 grit stones for fine grinding, but deeper colors can be achieved with additional grinding using higher grit stones. Special Finishes, sometimes referred to as “marble finishes” require additional labor and materials that will result in a higher cost. When selected, designers must indicate the use of a “Special Finish” plate in their specifications. Such finishes may also decrease the inherent slip resistance of the terrazzo floor. Terrazzo smoothness and gloss will vary depending upon the degree of finishing and polishing specified. Price adjustments should be expected for higher degrees of finishing.
