Fascia mounting is an option for those who do not want to penetrate the deck
surface which is the preferred choice when mounting to decks which are
waterproofed with a vinyl membrane or similar such material. Fascia mounting
allows the whole deck to be used opposed to a top mount railing system which
takes up the outer 4" of a deck surface. Fascia mounting is also more solid
mount than a top mounted system as the outward forces applied to the top rail
are then transferred into the fascia board opposed to relying on a perpendicular
mount on top of a deck surface; that being said the fascia surface needs to be
braced back to the deck joists and deck surface to take the required loading.
