Sliding Neutron Door

Some high energy linear accelerator installations require a specially constructed steel door with neutron absorbing borated polyethylene and lead for gamma ray absorption. Room designs that have no maze frequently require a higher level of protection at the door than those with a maze as part of the design. a-fabco's sliding neutron door is designed to withstand direct emissions by containing up to 19" of lead or lead and polyboron in combination. These very heavy doors (20,000 to 30,000 pounds) are configured to meet the physicist shielding specification and are designed for prolonged service. Proper maintenance at regular intervals is necessary to insure trouble free operation.

Personnel Barriers

|
In many cases, stationary or mobile protective barriers are required in the x-ray room for protection of personnel such as nurses, doctors and technicians who are required to be present while the x-ray beam is energized. To save space and allow for relocation, these units are generally pre-made and usually contain a window for observation of the patient or necessary equipment. The units can be made in any size to include either glass or acrylic protective windows.
A-fabco has designed many different configurations to meet any budget, including aluminum or stainless steel framing or all shielded plastic laminate.

Lead Lined Drywall

Lead lined drywall is fabricated in our Gibsonton, Florida plant using high quality Type X drywall and a variety of sheet lead thicknesses from 2 pound (1/32" -.794mm) to 8 pound (1/8" - 3.175mm) lead as backing. We recommend any lead thickness over 1/8" be backed on plywood. While usual and customary lead heights are to 7', we can fabricate to full height lengths of 8' or 10'. Our pricing includes the 2" wide by length of lead height batten strip with one for each drywall unit purchased.

a-fabco offers wood or metal doors complete with appropriate track, operator and dual interlock switch to meet CFR 10.20.40 radiation regulations, in any lead thickness or size. Available in 16GA or 18GA steel with specified lead in center, pre-machined for hardware and with fire rating to 45 minutes. These are available in an infinite variety of finishes including hardwood veneers and high pressure laminate skins, with pre-machining to meet spec, Warnock Hersey (Intertek) fire ratings to 20 minutes and lead thickness to 1/2"., in single leaves or pairs.

Windows for viewing the radiography area are available in lead glass or lead acrylic up to 48" x 96" in size. Since there are no domestic manufacturers, these materials must be imported from Europe or Asia. Since they are imported in standard sizes, care should be taken to size windows to take advantage of the stock sizes, since the customer will be paying for the larger size when cutting is involved. a-fabco is a distributor for Schott North America, Inc.

Lead Lined Frames

a-fabco offers single and double rabbeted door frames in welded or knock down configurations with prep for all types of hardware configurations to meet the architect specifications. Fire labels to 90 minutes are also available.
a-fabco, Inc. lead lined view window frames / borrow lites are welded out of 16 gauge steel as a standard. 14 or 12 gauge is available as a special order. The standard throat is 4-7/8" and removable glass stop sets are included in the price. Frames are lead lined with a thickness meeting the requirements as defined by the physicist.

Nuclear Medicine

Lead lined stainless steel or laminate cabinets are available for "Sharpes", generator or linen storage.

These "Sharpes" containers vary in size and style. A 12" x 12" x 12" with a 1" lip is standard. They provide for drop thru disposal of radioactive needles, swabs etc. The lead metal container is designed to stand alone or be recessed into a counter top. The port and entire top is lockable to prevent unauthorized access if you require. The container can be supplied with lead shielding from 1/8" to 2" thick.The containers with 1" to 2" lead have a specially designed pivoting, lockable top because of the weight of the lid.

Usually the customer schedules their unit to be delivered to our facility so that our cabinet shop can install the leaded cabinetry that conforms to their specification. This allows for us to provide the mounting to the trailer frame which is desirable for mobile units. It also insures that people familiar with the requirements for lead shielding perform the work.
