Overview:
CalStar Products, Inc. develops and manufactures sustainable building products that allow green architects and specifiers to dramatically reduce the energy and CO2 footprint of their projects and incorporate significant recycled materials, without compromising building performance or budgets. CalStar has developed a patent-pending formula and manufacturing process to make a better and more sustainable brick. CalStar bricks are not fired and do not contain Portland cement. Our process consumes 85% less energy and releases 85% less CO2. Plus, we use 40% post-industrial recycled material that would otherwise wind up in a landfill.

CalStar is proving that sustainability doesn’t need to be more expensive. By replacing expensive raw materials with recycled by-products and reducing energy use, we take cost out of the equation. So the same innovations that make our products sustainable also make them affordable.

Of course, we’ve retained all the features that everyone loves about brick. The durability, low-maintenance, and in-wall performance all meet or exceed the standards set for equivalent products. They meet or exceed all of the testing requirements for ASTM C216. Many masons can’t tell the difference, they weigh and lay the same as clay.

CalStar is revolutionizing hardscape. Our innovative manufacturing process uses dramatically less energy and emits significantly less CO2 than either fired clay or concrete pavers. As with our other masonry products, CalStar Permeable Pavers eliminate kiln firing and the use of Portland cement to deliver pavers that have 40% recycled content, 85% less CO2 emissions during manufacturing and up to 85% less embodied energy.

Permeable pavers are designed to allow rainwater to drain through, so stormwater recharges the watershed. CalStar Permeable Pavers meet ASTM C936. They have a 5.9% open area and can be packaged for mechanical installation. They are suitable for vehicular applications.

CalStar Products has added a Thru-Wall unit to its line of sustainably manufactured masonry. The Thru-Wall units combine the structural properties of standard concrete block with the preferred aesthetic of a traditional brick wall.

With nominal sizes of 8” x 4” x 16” and 12” x 4” x 16”, the Thru-Wall units are half as tall as standard concrete blocks, for an authentic brick look and structural use. The dual-sided units feature both a flat face for a classic 16” appearance and a notched face to fill with mortar for the look of 8” bricks. Eight solid and three range through-body colors are available, all with CalStar’s premium finish.

“Typically, specifiers must settle for a plain concrete exterior or use brick veneer over a CMU structural system to achieve both engineering and design requirements,” notes Craig Ratchford, vice president of sales and marketing for CalStar Products. “CalStar’s cost-competitive Thru-Wall units offer the best of both, with structural performance and aesthetic appeal.”
