Soil Retention
plantable concrete systems

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Jan Jansson, Founder of Soil Retention, has been working in the Construction Industry since 1964! He started his career in carpentry school, Jan Jansson – Founder of Soil Retention then soon went on to earn an Engineering degree. Jan worked as a Superintendent and Assistant Project Manager for a major Swedish contractor for five years, then in 1969 started his own construction company in Sweden.

In 1987, after moving to America with his family, Jan opened a franchise in Riverside County, California to manufacture and distribute plantable retaining wall blocks.

Jan soon recognized the need to build a more durable, versatile and better plantable retaining wall block that would more effectively meet the needs of various market segments. After extensive research and development, Jan and the development team at Soil Retention created a new block called Verdura®, (“Verdant” for green and “Dura” for durable). Verdura® is a fully plantable retaining wall block system that can be used in many applications from small garden walls to large commercial structures.

The Verdura® retaining wall system was quickly recognized as the most versatile and strongest Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall in the industry, and is now Caltrans approved!

Soil Retention continued to grow and build a reputation for quality products and services. Soon two more products were added Drivable Grass® - a permeable, flexible and plantable concrete pavement system for fire lanes, access roads, driveways, parking lots, bioswales, ditches, and various post construction BMPs. Drivable Grass® can be installed on commercial or retail applications; and Enviroflex® – a tapered, vertically interlocking articulating concrete block (ACB) revetment system for channels, culvert outlets and wetland traffic crossings.

Drivable Grass® Permeable Pavement

Drivable Grass® is a permeable, flexible and plantable concrete pavement system. This product is made of wet cast, low moisture absorption concrete. Drivable Grass® is cast with holes to allow for infiltration and root penetration. A cast-inside engineered polymer grid allows Drivable Grass® to flex and conform to irregular ground surface contours along pre-defined linear grooves, while providing the intended structural support needed for daily use. Drivable Grass® maintains its load supporting characteristics even when saturated. The design also eliminates sharp edges common in other products, and won't crack and break like rigid concrete or pop up like plastic.

Drivable Grass® offers a simple and reliable solution to storm water management through biofiltration, infiltration, and storage without losing valuable site area. With the use of Drivable Grass®, storm drains, hydrodynamic separators, filtration devices, and detention basins can be reduced or eliminated. Drivable Grass® also counts for required green space allowing for more usable land while reducing Heat Island Effect.

In response to customer demand, we are excited to now offer Drivable Turf', an artificial turf infill option that is available pre-cut for easy and fast installation with our Drivable Grass®

"We are thrilled to offer customers another infill option that not only simplifies installation, but provides an effective permeable, drought tolerant solution that still looks fresh and green year round," says Nick Jansson, company VP.

Drivable Turf™ is available in two color variations (brown on green and green on green) through our distribution network.

Verdura® Retaining Wall System image

Verdura® Retaining Wall System

The Verdura retaining wall system is the most plantable, versatile, and strongest Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall on the market today. The name Verdura comes from VERdant (green with vegetation) combined with DURAbility. Verdura offers the opportunity to create "living walls"; providing the strength and function of a standard retaining wall plus the added ability to sustain live plantings.

The Verdura retaining wall system is designed with a "positive mechanical connection" between the block and the geosynthetic reinforcement. This mechanical connection provides a uniform distribution of tensional strength that does not rely solely upon frictional forces generated from a stack-height of the block-units or point load from pins or clips. Combined with the high shear strength from the lip of the block, Verdura allows for soil compaction directly behind the block units facilitating the use of heavy construction equipment within close proximity to the wall face. Larger walls are built concurrently with grading and backfill is placed with scrapers.

Enviroflex® Concrete Block (ACB) System image

Enviroflex® Concrete Block (ACB) System

Enviroflex® is a tapered, vertically interlocking articulating concrete block (ACB) system designed for erosion control use in riverine, channel, or other areas with high velocity flows that are subject to scour. Each block vertically interlocks with an overlapping connection, eliminating the block's ability to protrude relative to other blocks. Enviroflex is manufactured from fiber reinforced concrete for added tensile strength. Openings in the block allow for infiltration and groundwater recharge to help mitigate flooding and storm water pollution. The openings also allow for vegetation to establish which promotes biofiltration and results in a green, natural, and environmentally pleasing appearance.

Enviroflex® offers a cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to rip-rap, gabion mattresses, solid concrete or asphalt linings, and other hard armor systems. The thin profile of Enviroflex® requires less excavation, trucking, and handling compared to most traditional systems. Maintenance costs are also reduced by eliminating graffiti potential or pouring on more rocks after a major storm. The products ability to accept sediment infill from storm events allows the establishment of riparian plants and enables cyclical natural habitat while providing a stable and scour proof bottom.
