The Business Unit “Extrusion” is part of the Calvi Holding, which has been established its position as a recognized global leader inside the metallurgical and mechanical industries.

With the companies Siderval S.p.A., based in Talamona/Italy, Cefival S.A., based in Persan/ France and Hoesch Schwerter Extruded Profiles GmbH, based in Schwerte/Germany the Business Unit “Extrusion” enables customized steel profile solutions and ensures the generation of synergies within the value chain in order to develop innovative and competitive products.

Within the realm of the production possibilities, extruded special steel profiles can fulfil almost all the requirements for freedom of design, construction physics and architecture as part of an overall ecological concept.


Special profiles made of steel allow the use of so called “skeleton steel constructions”. Large heights and widths can be spanned. The freedom of design using steel load bearing structures is almost limitless. For exactly this reason steel construction has experienced a renaissance in the past few decades as it is used not only because of its functionality, but also and in the main due to architectural reasons. Low costs and short construction times are also reasons to use steel profiles. Behind this it is also possible to make unusual glass and steel forms which allow large areas of transparency.

The Extrusion process makes it possible to form the material in such a way that it fulfils the relevant economical, structural and optical conditions. As a result of the differently structured production facilities used, even small volumes of special profiles can be produced economically. Special profiles are produced in all forms, qualities and surface finishes, as required for the intended application.

The result special profiles with the following product advantages:
  • sharp edges (external radii of c. 1.5 mm hot extruded to c. 0.8 mm cold drawn)
  • seamless finish for solid and hollow profiles (homogenous grain structure and no danger of leakage), thus particularly suited for heated faades
  • different material thicknesses within a profile cross-section (advantage: low construction depth with the same structural characteristics)
  • integration of grooves to take seals
  • surface smoothing by means of cold drawing
  • economical production resulting from low tooling costs even for small batch sizes

Hot Extrusion Process

During hot extrusion a round steel billet is pre-heated and, after leaving the furnace, is pushed through a forming die into a profile bar using a ram with an extrusion force of 2,200 t. Hot extruding offers substantial advantages in comparison with hot rolling, forging or machining. Hot extrusion can be used to make complex steel profile shapes even using metals which are difficult to form. In addition, small lot sizes can be produced economically.

We possesses highly sophisticated CAD and CAM systems which are used to support our customers during the design and engineering phases.

Hot extruded steel profiles offer the benefit of:
  • different material thicknesses within one profile cross-section
  • the possibility to use in highly sensitive areas, where the special profiles must with stand specific demands of temperature, pressure, aggressive media or hygienic requirements
  • seamless structure of solid and hollow sections
