	1.4	DESIGN / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
		A.	Structural Performance: Provide handrails and railings capable of withstanding the following structural loads without exceeding allowable design working stress of materials for handrails, railings, anchors and connections:
			1.	Top Rail of Guards: Shall withstand the following loads:
				a.	Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89kN) applied at any point and in any direction.
				b.	Uniform load of 50 lbf-ft. (0.07kN-m) applied horizontally and concurrently with uniform load of 100 lbf-ft. (0.14kN-m) applied vertically downward.
				c.	Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.
			2.	Hand rails Not Serving As Top Rails: Shall withstanding the following loads:
				a.	Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied at any point and in any direction.
				b.	Uniform load of 50 lbf-ft. (0.07kN-m) applied in any direction
				c.	Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.
			3.	Guard Infill Area: Shall withstand the following loads:
				a.	Concentrated horizontal load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied to 1 sq. ft. at any point in system, including panels, intermediate rails, balusters, or other elements composing infill area. Loads need not be assumed to act concurrently with loads on top rails in determining stress on guard.
		B.	Thermal Movements: Handrails and railings shall allow for movements resulting from 120 deg F (49 deg C) changes in ambient and 180 deg F (82 deg C) surface temperatures. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.
		C.	Corrosion Resistance: Separate incompatible materials to prevent galvanic corrosion.
	1.5	SUBMITTALS
		A.	Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
		B.	Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
			1.	Preparation instructions and recommendations.
			2.	Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
			3.	Installation methods.
		C.	Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation of handrails and railings. Include plans, elevations, sections, details and attachments to other Work.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete selection samples if colors have already been selected.
		D.	Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two complete sets of color and finish chips representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and finishes.
		E.	Verification Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples, minimum size 6 inches (150 mm) square, representing actual product, color, and finishes.

		F.	Assembly Samples: Provide assembled samples of railings sections, fabricated from full-size components, including top rail, post, handrail and infill and showing method of finishing intersections.
		G.	Manufacturer's Certificates: Certify products meet or exceed specified requirements.
		H.	Manufacturers warranties.
	1.6	QUALITY ASSURANCE
		A.	Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum three years [documented] experience
		B.	Single manufacturer with experience manufacturing and fabricating aluminum handrails and railings shall provide all primary products specified in this section.
		C.	Installer Qualifications: Installer with a minimum of five years documented experience installing systems of similar type and scope as those specified. If requested, include lists of completed projects with names and addresses of architects and owners.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.
		D.	Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.
			1.	Finish areas designated by Architect.
			2.	Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect.
			3.	Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.
	1.7	DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
		A.	Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
		B.	Protect materials from exposure to elements that could stain, mar or otherwise damage the material in storage..
		C.	Store materials off the ground in a ventilated weathertight location.
	1.8	WARRANTY
		A.	Provide manufacturer's Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in workmanship. The manufacturer also warrants that the Super Armor-Guard powder coat finish will not chip crack or flake.
	1.9	COORDINATION
		A.	Coordinate Work with other operations and installation of adjacent materials to avoid damage.
	PART 2	PRODUCTS
	2.1	MANUFACTURERS

	2.2	APPLICATIONS/SCOPE
		A.	Provide railings as selected from the manufacturer's standard products for the following applications:

			1.	Residential Railing.
			2.	Commercial Railing
			3.	Industrial Railing.
			4.	Fencing and Pool Surround.
			5.	Vehicle and Pedestrian Gate.
			6.	Handrail at stairs and ramps.
	2.3	COMPONENTS
		A.	General: Provide metal free from pitting, seam marks, roller marks, stains, discolorations, and other imperfections where exposed to view on finished units.
		B.	Aluminum: Alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for type of use and finish indicated, and with not less than strength and durability properties of alloy and temper designated below for each aluminum form required.
			1.	Extruded Bar and Tube: ASTM B 221, Pickets, alloy 6063-T52; Railing, 6005-T5.
			2.	Extruded Structural Pipe and Tube: ASTM B 429, alloy 6063-T832.
		C.	Brackets, Flanges and Anchors: Cast or formed metal of same type of material and finish as supported rails, unless otherwise indicated.
			1.	Provide cast brackets with flange tapped for concealed anchorage to threaded hanger bolt.
			2.	Provide formed or cast brackets with predrilled hole for exposed bolt anchorage.
			3.	Provide formed steel brackets with predrilled hole for bolted anchorage and with snap-on cover that matches rail finish and conceals bracket base and bolt head.
			4.	Provide brackets with interlocking pieces that conceal anchorage. Locate set screws on bottom of bracket.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select anchors and setting materials required from the following paragraphs. Delete paragraphs not required.
	2.4	ACCESSORIES
		A.	Handrail Anchors: Select fasteners of type, grade and class required to produce connections suitable for anchoring handrails and railings to other types of construction indicated and capable of withstanding design loads.
		B.	Handrail and Railing Component Anchors: Use fasteners fabricated from 410 or 18-8 stainless steel, unless otherwise indicated. Do not use metals that are corrosive or incompatible with materials joined.
			1.	Provide concealed fasteners for interconnecting railing components and for attaching them to other work, unless exposed fasteners are unavoidable or are standard fastening method for handrail and railing indicated.
			2.	Provide phillip flat-head machine screws for exposed fasteners, unless otherwise indicated.
			3.	Screw heads powder-coat or painted to match finish of railing.
		C.	Cast-in-Place and Post installed Anchors: Anchors of type indicated below, fabricated from corrosion-resistant materials with capability to sustain, without failure, a load equal to six times the load imposed when installed in unit masonry and equal to four items the load imposed when installed in concrete, as determined by testing per ASTM E 488 conducted by a qualified independent testing agency.
			1.	Cast-in-place anchors.
			2.	Chemical anchors.
			3.	Expansion anchors.
		D.	Non-shrink, Nonmetallic Grout: Premixed, factory-packaged, non-staining, non-corrosive, non-gaseous grout complying with ASTM C 1107. Provide grout specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior and exterior applications.
		E.	Interior Anchoring Cement: Factory-packaged, non-shrink, non-staining, hydraulic-controlled expansion cement formulation for mixing with water at project site to create pourable anchoring, patching and grouting compound. Use for interior applications only.
	2.5	FABRICATION
		A.	Assemble handrails and railings in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize filed splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces.
		B.	Mechanical Connections: Fabricate handrails and railings by connecting members with railing manufacturer's standard concealed mechanical fasteners and fittings, unless otherwise indicated. Fabricate members and fittings to produce flush, smooth, rigid, hairline joints.
		C.	Brackets, Flanges, Fittings and Anchors: Provide manufacturer's standard wall brackets, flanges, miscellaneous fittings and anchors to connect handrail and railing members to other construction.
		D.	Close exposed ends of railing members with prefabricated end fittings.
		E.	Provide mounted handrails wall returns at wall ends unless otherwise indicated. Close ends of returns, unless clearance between end of railing and wall is 1/4 inch (6 mm) or less.
	2.6	FINISH
		A.	General
			1.	Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes.
			2.	Appearance of Finished Work:
				a.	Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent units are acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved samples. Noticeable variations in the same unit are not acceptable.
				b.	Variations in appearance of other components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.
		B.	Aluminum Finishes
			1.	Finish designations prefixed by AA comply with the system established by the Aluminum Association for designating aluminum finishes.
			2.	Powder Coating: Prepare, "chrome free" pre-treat, and apply coating to exposed aluminum surfaces to comply with manufacturer's written instructions.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select the finish material required from the following two paragraphs. Delete paragraph not required.
				a.	Material: TGIC Polyester Powder Coating, 3 mil. average film thickness complying with AAMA 2604.
				b.	Material: Super Armor-Guard high performance powder coating, 3 mil. average film thickness complying with AAMA 2604.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select color(s) required from the following paragraphs. Delete paragraphs not required. Selections might include up to four different selections for color. If multiple colors are required indicate the location of each on the Drawings.
				c.	Color: As Selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range for color, including custom colors.

					6)	Custom Color as selected by the Architect.
			3.	Performance:
				a.	Meet or exceed a 4000 hour salt spray test.
				b.	TGIC polyester powder coating meets or exceeds a H-2H pencil hardness in accordance to ASTM D 3363.
				c.	Super Armor-Guard meets or exceeds a 4H pencil hardness in accordance to ASTM D 3363.
				d.	Meets or exceeds ASTM D 3359 adhesion test.
	PART 3	EXECUTION
	3.1	EXAMINATION
		A.	Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.
		B.	Verify field measurements are acceptable to suit stair assembly tolerances.
		C.	Verify supports and anchors are correctly positioned.
		D.	If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
	3.2	PREPARATION
		A.	Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
		B.	Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
	3.3	INSTALLATION
		A.	Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
		B.	Fit exposed connections together to form tight, hairline joints.
		C.	Cutting, Fitting, and Placement: Set handrails and railings accurately in location, alignment and elevation measured from established lines and levels and free from rack.
			1.	Do not weld, cut or abrade coated or finished surfaces of railing components that are intended for field connection by mechanical or other means without further cutting or fitting.
			2.	Align rails so variations from level or parallel alignment do not exceed 1/4 inch in 12 feet (1.6 mm per m).
		D.	Coat concealed surfaces of aluminum and copper alloys that will be in contact with grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or dissimilar metals, with a heavy coat of bituminous paint.
		E.	Adjust handrails and railings before anchoring to ensure alignment at abutting joint's space posts at interval indicated, but not less than required to achieve structural loads.
		F.	Use anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing handrails and railings and for properly transferring loads to in-place construction.
		G.	Use mechanical joints for permanently connecting railing components. Use wood blocks and padding to prevent damage to railing members and fittings.
	3.4	CLEANING AND PROTECTION
		A.	Touch-up: Immediately after erection, clean bolted connections, and abraded areas of shop paint, and touch-up exposed areas with same material.
		B.	Restore finishes damaged during installation and construction so no evidence remains of correction work. Return items that cannot be refinished in field to shop; make required alterations and refinish entire unit, or provide new units.
		C.	Protect finishes of handrails and railings from damage during construction, with temporary protective coverings approved by railing manufacturer. Remove protective coverings at the time of Substantial Completion.
