	INTERIOR FIRE-RETARDANT TREATED WOOD

Pyro Guard meets the requirements of The International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC) for fire retardant treated wood. Pyro Guard has been issued an Evaluation Service Report (ESR-1791) by the ICC Evaluation Service, 1nc. which includes design value adjustments for use at elevated temperatures. Pyro-Guard is classified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as a low-hygroscopic Type "A" pressure impregnated fire retardant treatment for lumber and plywood. Pyro Guard can be used in interior structural and non-structural applications. Pyro-Guard interior fire retardant is recommended for enclosed applications, including roof sheathing, where it is not exposed to the weather, dampness, high humidity or wetting.
	This specification section covers the fire retardant treatment and handling and fabrication of treated materials. Grades and species of plywood and lumber to be treated must be specified separately.

		A.	Store products under cover or shelter, off the ground with proper ventilation allowing for air circulation and protect from construction traffic, and damage in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.
	1.6	SEQUENCING
		A.	Ensure that products of this section are supplied to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.

	2.2	APPLICATIONS/SCOPE
		A.	All lumber and plywood designated to be interior fire treated shall be pressure impregnated with Pyro-Guard. Pyro-Guard is provided in conformance with the following:
			1.	ASTM D 3201 - Standard Test Method for Hygroscopic Properties of Fire-Retardant Wood and Wood-Base Products.
			2.	ASTM D 5516 - Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Flexural Properties of Fire-Retardant Treated Softwood Plywood Exposed to Elevated Temperatures.
			3.	ASTM D 5664 - Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Effects of Fire-Retardant Treatments and Elevated Temperatures on Strength Properties of Fire-Retardant Treated Lumber.
			4.	ASTM D 6305 - Practice for Calculating Bending Strength Design Adjustment Factors for Fire-retardant-Treated Plywood Roof Sheathing.
			5.	ASTM D 6841 - Standard Practice for Calculating Design Value Treatment Adjustment Factors for Fire-Retardant-Treated Lumber.

	2.3	FIRE RETARDANT TREATMENT
		A.	Lumber and Plywood: Pressure impregnated with Pyro-Guard in accordance with Follow-up Service procedures of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Fire-retardant treatment shall contain no halogens, sulfates, chlorides, ammonium phosphate, urea formaldehyde, or formaldehyde.

			2.	Surface Burning Characteristics: Flame spread index of 25 or less and flame spread not more than 10.5 feet beyond centerline of burners with no evidence of significant progressive combustion when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84 for a total of 30 minutes.
			3.	Moisture Content:
				a.	Equilibrium moisture content of not more than 28 percent when tested in accordance with ASTM D 3201 at 92 percent relative humidity.
				b.	Kiln dry lumber to 19 percent or less moisture content after treatment.
				c.	Kiln dry plywood to 15 percent or less moisture content after treatment.
			4.	Labeling: Each piece of lumber and plywood shall be labeled with a permanent ink marking as follows:
				a.	Bear the UL Classification Mark certifying specified flame spread rating.
				b.	Plywood shall be marked on both sides
				c.	Production and kiln drying after treatment monitored by Timber Products Inspection, 1nc., with each piece labeled KDAT
				d.	Marked evaluated for high temperature strength for roof applications by the ICC Evaluation Service, Inc
		B.	Provide design value adjustments and span ratings evaluated by ICC Evaluation Service, Inc
	2.4	FABRICATION
		A.	Milling: Lumber shall be ripped or run to pattern, prior to treatment.
		B.	Surface milling or planing is not allowed after treatment
		C.	Cross grain cuts are allowed.
		D.	Plywood may be cut in any direction.
	PART 3	EXECUTION
	3.1	EXAMINATION
		A.	Discard pieces with defects that might impair quality or work.
		B.	Examine for wet conditions before installation; do not install materials that are wet or have been wet, unless they can be dried to original specified kiln dried moisture content.
	3.2	PREPARATION
		A.	Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
		B.	Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
	3.3	FIELD CUTTING
		A.	Lumber: Do not rip or mill lumber after fire-retardant treatment; end cuts and joining cuts are permitted. Drilling of holes and notching permitted in accordance with American Forest and Paper Association Wood Construction Data #1.
		B.	Plywood: Fire-retardant-treated plywood may be cut in any direction.
	3.4	APPLICATION
		A.	Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
		B.	Comply with additional requirements specified in Section _____.
		C.	Structural Applications: Use design value tables listed in ICC Evaluation Service Report ESR-1791.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include the following two paragraphs as required for roof sheathing systems. Delete if not required.
		D.	Provide adequate airflow across at least one surface in wood roof systems to control moisture and reduce temperature.
		E.	Cover roof sheathing with felt or roofing immediately after installation. If wetted during construction, allow to dry before enclosure or covering with roofing material.
		F.	Termite and decay resistance Pyro Guard is not recommended for use where exposed to precipitation, direct wetting, regular condensation, or ground contact. Do not use in contact with concrete that is in direct contact with soil.
		G.	Use corrosion resistant fasteners for all types of treated wood. Acceptable for use with galvanized nails, truss plates, ductwork, plumbing, conduit and copper.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include the following paragraph as required for applied finish systems. Delete if not required. Pyro-Guard treated wood can be finished or glued with good results. As with untreated wood, finish and adhesive performance is highly dependent on moisture content, species, surface preparation, application method, and finishing system. Prior test applications of applied finishes are recommended.
		H.	Coordinate surface preparation and applied finishes with the requirements of Section 09900.
	3.5	PROTECTION
		A.	Protect installed products until completion of project.
		B.	Repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
