          2.2WRCLA WESTERN RED CEDAR
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER** Select grade of Western Red Cedar from paragraph below as required for project.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER** No. 2 and Better Clear grade should be specified when the finest quality rough lumber is required. C and Better Clear is suitable for high-quality landscape structures and as exposed posts and beams in heavy timber construction. D and Better Clear permits larger and more numerous natural characteristics. Some pieces may require trimming to yield clear lengths for the intended use. This grade is widely accepted in the construction of outdoor structures. Appearance Knotty grade has highly restricted wane allowances to give well-defined corners. It contains no holes or other characteristics and is available rough sawn or rougher headed in nominal 2 inch and thicker sizes. Also available with structural grading. Appearance Knotty, structural, should be specified when strength characteristics are required. No. 2 and Better Structural lumber grade is evaluated for structural strength characteristics, intended for engineered applications where strength is more important than appearance. This grade includes pieces meeting the grades of Select Structural, No. 1 Structural and No. 2 Structural. Standard Beams, Posts, and Timbers grade is intended for general construction purposes where serviceability is more important than appearance. No structural values are assigned.

          A.Grade:
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete lumber grades not required.
1.Grade: No. 2 and Better Clear.
          2.Grade: C and Better Clear.
          3.Grade: D and Better Clear.
          4.Grade: Appearance Knotty.
          5.Grade: Appearance Knotty, structural.
6.Grade: No. 2 and Better Structural.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Surface Texture. Delete two of the following three paragraphs. Saw Textured surface is obtained during the milling process using either circular or band saws, is present on all four sides. Rougher Headed texture, receives its texture from a milling process which uses roughened planer knives. The rough texture is clearly visible on all four sides. S4S Texture provides a uniformly sized product and a smooth surface on all four sides for a high quality appearance. Sizes from 2 inches by 4 inches (51mm x 102mm) up to 6 inches by 6 inches (153mm x 153mm) are generally available.
          7.Surface Texture: Saw Textured.
          8.Surface Texture: Rougher Headed.
9.Surface Texture: Surfaced Four Sides (S4S).
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select moisture content. Delete paragraphs not required.
          10.Moisture Content: Green (unseasoned).
          11.Moisture Content: Air-dried.
          12.Moisture Content: Kiln-dried
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Only Hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum, and stainless steel fasteners should be used to fasten Western Red Cedar decking. Stainless steel fasteners are preferred, hot-dipped galvanized is most widely used and economical. For most applications, No. 304 (18-8) grade stainless steel provides adequate corrosion resistance; for decks exposed to salt air, use No. 316 grade. Other types of fasteners, such as electro-plated, can rust, disintegrate and react adversely with the natural preservatives present in cedar, resulting in stains and streaks.

          2.3FASTENERS
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select Nail types required for the project, or delete if nails are not required.

          A.Nails:
          1.Material: No. 304 stainless steel.
          2.Material: No. 316 stainless steel.
          3.Material: Hot-dipped galvanized.
          4.Material: Aluminum.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select screw types required for the project, or delete if nails are not required.

          B.Screws:
          1.Material: No. 304 stainless steel.
          2.Material: No. 316 stainless steel.
          3.Material: Double Hot-Dipped Galvanized.
NOTE ** Large members require timber connectors other than nails. Bolts, lag screws, split rings and shear plates, and custom made hardware are commonly used in heavy timber structures where the joint strength must be greater than can be achieved with nails. These connectors should be corrosion-resistant or suitably coated to prevent corrosion and staining.

          C.Timber Connectors: _______________________________.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete the following article if no finish or stain is specified.

          2.4PROTECTING FINISH

          C.Adhere to coating manufacturer's instructions.

          PART 3EXECUTION

          3.1PREPARATION

A.Coordinate work with related trades; scribe and cope timbers for accurate fit. Allow installation of related work to avoid cutting and patching.

B.Discard timbers that are warped, twisted, bowed, crooked or otherwise defective.
