          1.4DEFINITIONS

A.Shape or "profile": A factory-made, decorative, non load bearing, non fire rated, architectural shape consisting of a foam core and surface coating(s), attached to the face of code compliant building walls. Depending on the type of the shape, the outermost surface of a factory-made Patterson Whittaker profile may or may not be the final, finished exterior surface.

B.Attachment Adhesive: Adhesive used to bond the shape to the substrate.

C.Substrate: The wall surface to which the shape is attached. (Note: the substrate may not necessarily be the primary material of which the wall is made. i.e. a painted concrete wall has a paint substrate.)

D.Finish: The outermost, visible, aesthetic surface of the shape. (Note: some shapes do not have the finish applied in the factory. Some finishes are applied at the construction site, such as paint or a textured coating.)

E.Base Coat: The layer that is factory-applied to the outside surface of the foam, consisting of the base coat adhesive and reinforcing mesh.

F.Base Coat Adhesive: A proprietary, mineral-based adhesive used on the outside face of the foam core.

G.Reinforcing mesh: Coated, open weave glass fiber mesh embedded in the base coat adhesive to strengthen the base coat.

H.Foam: Expanded polystyrene (commonly called "EPS") foam plastic insulation used as the core of the shape.

I.Wrapping: The bringing of the base coat around the edge of the foam core.

J.Returned End: The end of a shape that has the base coat brought around the end, thereby finishing-off the end of the piece. See also, cut end.

K.Cut End: The end of a shape produced by cutting the shape across its width to size, which as the core and base coat exposed. See also, returned end.

L.Sealant: A wet-applied elastomeric material used to weatherproof the joints between the ends of the shapes, and to seal the perimeter of the shape where it meets the substrate.

M.Sealant Primer: A wet-applied, paint-like material applied to the sealant bond-to area on the shape, prior to applying the sealant, to enhance the sealant performance.

N.Primer: A wet-applied, paint-like material applied to the shape's base coat to enhance the shape's performance. (Note: not all shapes require the use of a primer.)

O.Cleat: A foam plastic strip, attached horizontally to the substrate using an adhesive, and used to support the shape and to aid the attachment adhesive while the adhesive is setting.

P.Wafer: Thin foam plastic pieces, having the contour of the foam core, used as spacers to control the width of joints between the ends of shapes.

          PART 3EXECUTION

          3.1EXAMINATION

A.Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B.If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

          3.2PREPARATION

A.Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

B.Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

          3.3INSTALLATION

A.Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B.Install profiles to the following tolerances:
1.Joint Width: not to exceed 3/8 inch (114 mm).
2.Joint Alignment: not to exceed 1/8 inch (3 mm).
          3.Deviation from Plane: +/- 1/4 inch (6 mm) per 25 feet (7620 mm).
          4.Deviation from Plumb: +/- 1/8 inch (3 mm) per 10 feet (3048 mm).
5.Deviation from Plane and Alignment, Panel to Panel: 1/16 (1.5 mm).
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** PW products can be installed in a variety of ways. The size and weight of the shape segment, desired installation location and site weather conditions are factors requiring varying approaches. Consult with manufacturer for recommendations.

          C.Attaching Shapes with Adhesives:
1.Use approved polyurethane adhesives that are fully warranted for attachment to all approved substrates.
2.Hot glue is recommended to provide immediate attachment and will securely hold most shapes in place until the polyurethane adhesive has had a chance to sufficiently cure. The combination of quick-setting hot glue and the slower curing, but permanent, bonding of approved adhesives is recommended for most casings, sills and other smaller-scale architectural details.
3.The hot glue is recommended when outside temperatures fall below 55 degrees F (13 degrees C).

          D.Attaching Shapes with Mechanical Fasteners:
1.Install installation clips attached to the building face for temporary support shelves to suspend shape segments in proper position until the applied adhesive has cured enough to provide permanent adhesion to the building surface.
2.Use installation clips for installation of larger mid-bands, headers and cornice materials. Use when temperature or other weather conditions adversely affect hot glue adhesion qualities.
3.Certain shapes, such as large-scale cornice and parapet segments, shall include factory-installed "Z" and "L" bar metal strapping or EPS component support structures (patent pending). These attachment mechanisms shall be used for the fastening to upper walls and parapet structures.

          E.Installing Foam Spacers:
1.Insert 1/4 inch (6 mm) foam spacers (patent pending) between fixed segments to allow for product expansion and movement. Spacer shall align exactly with the product core to ensure proper depth for later application of an approved grouting sealant.
2.If grout joints wider than 1/4 inch (6 mm) are desired, insert closed-cell "backer rod" stripping between the segments. Provide sealant joints of depth to width ratio of 1 to 2 or as required by section 07920.

          F.Joint Sealing:
1.Flush 1/4 inch (6 mm) joints shall be made with the application of an approved silicone sealant over the segment spacers.
2.Replicate flush or concave tooled grout joint, larger than 1/4 inch (6mm) using backer rod, shall be made using siliconized grout for mitered-corner joint fabrications.

          G.Final Top Edge Sealant Application:
1.Top edges of installed shapes shall be sealed to prevent water infiltration behind the installed materials.
2.If this procedure is completed before the application of any final finish stucco coating, an approved polyurethane sealant shall be used to will chemically bond with the acrylic top coatings. Sonneborn's Sonolastic 150 sealant is recommended by the manufacturer.
3.If the final edge sealant is applied after the finish coating has been applied, a silicone sealant is required.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** PW stone finish materials are pre-sealed in the factory before shipment. For materials installed in shadowed, high-moisture environments conducive to mold or fungus development, ask your PW rep or masonry supplier for recommended anti-fungal or other preventative sealants. Delete if not required.

          H.Seal Coat Protection:
1.Provide a field applied clear anti-fungal coating to exposed surface of shapes.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Because PW products contain acrylic compounds, they form an exceedingly strong "cross-linking polymer bond" with these easy-to-use latex products and avoid any need for oil-based primers. The paint application is not warranted by PW

          I.Painting:
1.Stucco grade, paint grade and interior crown materials shall be painted with an acrylic latex paint as specified and scheduled.
2.Stone finish materials shall be painted, where scheduled or required. Surface shall be lightly sanded. Provide spot-testing prior to painting to confirm adhesion.

          3.4PROTECTION

A.Protect installed products until completion of project.

B.Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
