          1.4SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
 
          A.Air Barrier Assembly Performance: Installed product and accessories constitute an air barrier assembly, which shall be air-tight, durable and continuous. Assembly shall accommodate movements of building materials by providing expansion and control joints as required, with accessory seal materials at such locations, changes in substrate and perimeter conditions.
          1.Assembly shall be capable of withstanding combined positive and negative design wind, fan and stack pressures on the envelope without damage or displacement, and shall transfer the load to the structure.
          2.Assembly shall not displace adjacent materials under full load.
          3.Assembly shall be joined in an airtight and flexible manner to the air barrier material of adjacent assemblies, allowing for the relative movement of assemblies due to thermal and moisture variations and creep, and anticipated seismic movement.
          a.Foundation and walls, including penetrations, ties and anchors.
          b.Walls, windows, curtain walls, storefronts, louvers or doors.
          c.Different wall assemblies and fixed openings within those assemblies.
          d.Wall and roof connections and penetrations.
          e.Floors over unconditioned space.
          f.Walls, floor and roof across construction, control and expansion joints.
          g.Walls, floors and roof to utility, pipe and duct penetrations.
          h.Seismic and expansion joints.
          i.All other leakage pathways in the building envelope.
 
          B.Material Performance:
          1.Installed product and accessories shall exhibit no visible water leakage when tested per ASTM E 331 and shall perform as a liquid water drainage plane flashed to discharge to the exterior any incidental condensation or water penetration.
          2.Installed product and accessories shall exhibit an air leakage rate not exceeding 0.02 L/s*m2 at 75 Pa (0.004 CFM/ft2 at 1.57 PSF) according to ASTM E 283. Air leakage shall not exceed this rate while product and accessories remain soundly adhered after exposure to sustained and gust wind loading according to ASTM E 330.
          3.Product shall be solvent free, have VOC content of not more than 30 grams per liter and shall be free of noxious odors.
 
          1.5SUBMITTALS
 
          A.Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product data, installation instructions, and manufacturer's printed instructions for evaluating, preparing, and treating substrate, temperature and other limitations of installation conditions, technical data, and tested physical and performance properties.
          1.Submit letter from primary materials manufacturer indicating approval of products not manufactured by primary manufacturer.
          2.Include statement that materials are compatible with adjacent materials proposed for use.
          3.Submit reports indicating that field peel-adhesion test on all materials to which sealants are adhered have been performed and the changes made, if required, to other approved materials, in order to achieve successful adhesion.
 
          B.Shop Drawings:
          1.Shop drawings showing locations and extent of air and vapor barrier and details of typical conditions.
          2.Manufacturer's technical data sheets and material safety data sheets for product and accessories.
          3.Manufacturer's installation instructions.
          4.Manufacturer's documentation of volatile organic compounds (VOC) content for product and accessories.
 
          C.Verification Samples: 3 inch by 4 inch (76 mm by 102 mm) minimum size, of cured product and transition membrane.
 
          D.Certifications:
          1.Provide evidence of installer qualification by manufacturer.
          2.Provide evidence of evaluation of product by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA).

          3.Provide evidence of licensing and certification under the ABAA Quality Assurance Program.
 
          1.6QUALITY ASSURANCE
 
          A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Obtain primary materials from a single manufacturer regularly engaged in manufacturing air and vapor barrier membranes. Obtain secondary materials from a source acceptable to the primary materials manufacturer.
 
          B.Installer Qualifications:
          1.Experienced in applying the same or similar materials and shall be specifically approved in writing by manufacturer.

          2.Certified by BPQI (Building Performance Quality Institute) for the ABAA Quality Assurance Program in accordance with the requirements outlined in the program. Installers shall have their photo-identification certification cards in their possession and available on the project site, for inspection upon request.
 
          C.Products and accessories shall comply with all state and local regulations controlling use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

          D.Comply with the provisions of the Owner's Building Envelope Commissioning program.
 
          E.Pre-Installation/Construction Meetings: Convene a minimum of one week prior to commencing Work of this section, in accordance with Project Meetings requirements.
 
          F.Accredited Laboratory Testing for Materials: Laboratory accredited by International Accreditation Service Inc. (IAS), American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), or the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.
 
          G.Field-Constructed Mock-Ups: Prior to installation on Project, apply product and accessories as follows to verify details under shop drawing submittals, to demonstrate tie-ins with adjoining construction and other termination conditions and to become familiar with properties of materials in application:
          1.Apply in field-constructed mockups of assemblies as specified.
          2.Apply at each type of connection shown in the mock-up including joints in back-up wall, cladding, window, doorframe and sill, insulation, flashing, building corner condition, junction with roof system, foundation wall and typical penetrations and gaps; illustrating interface of materials and seals.
          3.Allow full cure of product on mock-up according to manufacturer's instructions before testing. Test mock-up in accordance with ASTM E 783 and ASTM E 1105 for air and water infiltration.
          4.Cooperate and coordinate with the Owner's inspection and testing agency. Do not cover any installed product unless it has been inspected, tested and approved.
 
          1.7DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
 
          A.Deliver materials to Project site in original packages with seals unbroken, labeled with Manufacturer's name, product name, lot number and directions for storage. Protect products from freezing.
 
          B.Store materials in their original, undamaged packages in clean, dry, protected location and within temperature range required by manufacturer.
 
          C.Avoid spillage. Immediately notify Architect if spillage occurs and start clean up procedures. Clean spills and leave area as it was prior to spill.
 
          D.Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
 
          1.8WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL
 
          A.Separate and recycle waste materials in accordance with construction waste management and disposal requirements, and with the waste reduction work plan.
 
          1.9PROJECT CONDITIONS
 
          A.Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
          1.Do not apply product or accessories during rain or accumulating snowfall.
          2.Apply product and accessories within approved ambient and substrate temperature range stated in manufacturer's literature.
          3.Do not apply product or accessories over incompatible materials.
 
          B.Comply with safety and environmental measures indicated in manufacturer's MSDS, and mandated by federal, state and local regulations.
 
          1.10WARRANTY
 
          A.Manufacturer's Warranty: Provide manufacturer's standard material warranty, minimum 5 years.

          2.2SELF-ADHERING AIR AND VAPOR BARRIERS
 
          A.Self-Adhering Air and Vapor Barrier: Nominal 0.040 inch (40 mils) (1 mm) thick membrane consisting of smooth surfaced, cross-laminated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film fully-coated with rubberized asphalt adhesive. Film shall be legibly imprinted with manufacturer's brand name, logo and contact information. Membrane shall be provided in rolls of various widths as applicable to project conditions, interleaved with disposable silicone release paper.

          PART 3EXECUTION
 
          3.1EXAMINATION
 
          A.Examine substrates, areas, and conditions affecting installation of product and accessories for compliance with requirements. Verify that surfaces and conditions are suitable prior to commencing Work of this section. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

          B.Concrete substrates shall be cured for a minimum of seven days.
 
          C.Surfaces shall be sound, dry and free of oil, grease, dirt, excess mortar or other contaminants.
 
          D.Surfaces shall be supported and flush at joints without large voids or sharp protrusions.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not required.
 
          E.Masonry joints shall be struck flush and completely filled with mortar. Mortar droppings shall be removed from masonry ties and surfaces.

          F.Damaged or improperly-fastened sheathing shall be remedied to comply with building code and sheathing manufacturer's requirements.

          2.Gaps or obstructions such as steel beams, angles, plates and projections which cannot be spanned or covered by product or accessories.
          3.Anticipated problems applying product and accessories over substrate.

          3.2SURFACE PREPARATION
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** This project will have fluid-applied air and vapor barrier material applied to the cavity side of the CMU. Special attention and care shall be taken to provide a smooth, filled surface to receive the membrane. This care is necessary to insure the design performance of the selected materials.
 
          A.Coordinate with concrete and concrete masonry unit (CMU) trades to ensure substrate wall is prepared as follows to accept the air barrier:
          1.Surfaces shall be free of contaminants such as grease, oil and wax on surfaces to receive membrane.
          2.The CMU surfaces shall be free from projections.
          3.Strike mortar joints full and flush to face of concrete block.
          4.Fill voids and holes greater than 1/2 inch (13 mm) across with mortar or non-shrink grout.
          5.Fill cracks, gaps and joints exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) width with mortar or non-shrink grout.
          6.Grind flush or make smooth surface irregularities exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) in height or sharp to touch.
          7.Fill around penetrations with mortar, sealant or other approved fill material and strike flush.
          8.Fill honeycomb in concrete with non-shrink grout or fill compound.
          9.Remove mortar droppings on brick ties, shelf angles, brick shelves and other horizontal obstructions.
          10.If surfaces cannot be made smooth to the satisfaction of the Architect, it will be the responsibility of the trade to apply a parge coat (one part cement to three parts sand) over surface to receive fluid-applied membrane air barrier.

          B.Work of this Section includes the following surface preparation:
          1.Fill cracks in concrete and masonry exceeding 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) width and not exceeding 1/8 inch (3 mm) width with one of the following materials: Mastic, roller grade product or non-shrink grout.
          2.Treat cracks in concrete and masonry exceeding 1/8 inch (3 mm) width and not exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) width with sheathing joint treatment.
          3.Fill cracks, gaps and joints exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) width with tooled joint sealant over backer rod.
          4.Fill rough gaps around pipe, conduit and similar penetrations with mortar, non-shrink grout or polyurethane foam.
          5.Treat sheathing joints with either sheathing joint treatment, or fill with joint sealant and strike flush.
 
          3.3PERIMETER TRANSITIONS
 
          A.Prepare areas to receive transition membrane with contact adhesive. Contact adhesive shall be provided at recommended coverage rate and visible for 1 inch (25 mm) minimum beyond edge of installed transition membrane.
 
          B.Install transition membrane according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
 
          C.Apply transition membrane or reinforcing fabric encapsulated in roller-grade product according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings in the following areas: Joints, changes in plane, changes in substrate, window openings, and transitions to different systems.
 
          D.Transition membrane or reinforcing fabric shall bear 3 inches (76 mm) minimum onto dissimilar substrates.
 
          3.4INSTALLATION, GENERAL
 
          A.Penetrations: Seal penetrations made through installed product according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
 
          B.Fenestration Installed Before or After Product: Provide air and water seal between fenestration and opaque wall according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
 
          C.Roof Air Barrier: Join to roofing product according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not required.
 
          3.5INSTALLATION OF SHEET APPLIED MATERIALS
 
          A.Allow materials used during surface preparation to cure fully before applying Product.
 
          B.Apply contact adhesive to substrate according to manufacturer's instructions.
 
          C.Apply product to prepared surfaces according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
 
          D.Laps between adjacent pieces of sheet membrane shall be 2 inches (51 mm) or greater.
 
          E.Sheet membrane shall bear 3 inches (76 mm) minimum onto dissimilar substrates.
 
          F.Cut edges, penetrations, non-shingled laps and similar surface defects of installed product shall be sealed with mastic.

          3.6INSTALLATION OF FLUID-APPLIED MATERIALS
 
          A.Allow materials used during surface preparation to cure fully before applying product.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete product not required.
 
          B.Spray-Grade Product: Apply according to Manufacturer's instructions.
 
          C.Roller-Grade Product: Apply according to Manufacturer's instructions.
 
          D.Cured membrane thickness shall measure a minimum of 0.040 inch (40 mils) (1 mm).
 
          E.Provide complete coverage without pinholes or voids. Apply greater thickness of product as necessary to provide continuous coating over rough surfaces and irregularities.
 
          F.Apply product 2 inches (51 mm) minimum onto transition membrane details.
 
          G.Apply product over sheathing joint treatment details.
 
          3.7REPAIR AND PROTECTION
 
          A.Protect from damage during application and remainder of construction period.
 
          B.Inspect before covering. Repair or replace damaged material according to manufacturer's instructions and drawings.
 
          C.Product and accessories are not designed for permanent exposure. Cover with insulation or exterior cladding as soon as schedule allows.

          1.Outdoor exposure of installed Transition Membrane shall not exceed 60 days.
          2.Outdoor exposure of installed Product shall not exceed 30 days.

          3.Outdoor exposure of installed Transition Membrane shall not exceed 60 days.
          4.Outdoor exposure of installed Product shall not exceed 180 days.

          D.Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
