The benefit of this revolutionary process is stronger and more pliable shingles for your roofing needs. Another advantage of the shingles is that they can be recycled when they are no longer used or needed, to be remanufactured, reducing any adverse impact on the environment.

Part of our commitment to you, our customer, is ensuring that our products have been tested and have met or exceeded the requirements of product safety and performance for building materials. To fulfill this requirement, we have tested our shingles under the following Warnock-Hersey test guidelines: Weathering /UV; Penetration /Uplift Bend; Flame Retardancy; Temperature Cycling; Wind Driven Rain; Hail Damage

Below is a list of the advantages of NewTech Shingles:
Flexibility: NewTech's unique flexibility allows the same shingles to be used for all ridges and valleys. There is never a need for custom made pieces, because every NewTech shingle can be cut and set to any angle and size you need.
Bonding Ability: An ice/water shield is not required because NewTech Shingles will bond with each other to create one complete protective layer. It's a natural process that does not require additional bonding agents.
Ease of Installation: Installation of NewTech Shingles is easy. Simply nail over shingles over 30lb felt underlayment. For ridges, NewTech Shingles can be rolled or folded to any angle to fit perfectly. For valleys, cut and nail in place. It's that simple.
Green: NewTech Shingles are made out of 100% recycled plastic, and is completely recyclable.
Pricing: NewTech Shingles are priced much lower than the leading brands of composite shingles and there are no additional costs required for ridges and valley pieces. Please contact our sales representative for more pricing information.

NewTech is proud to offer you a large selection of styles and colors to choose from. Environmentally conscious with a dedication to improvement, we at NewTech want to provide you a better outdoor life.

          PART 3EXECUTION

          3.1EXAMINATION

A.Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B.If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

          3.2PREPARATION

A.Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Ventilators: Because modern houses are often built to be very weather-tight, ventilation is crucial. Insufficient ventilation can create significant moisture problems. Codes require that there should be one square foot of vent space for every 300 square feet of attic space. 50% of the venting should be at the eave line. NewTech recommends using continuous ridge and soft vents to ensure proper airflow.

B.Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

C.Shingle shall be installed over solid decking.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete decking material not required.
          1.A minimum 15/32 inch (12 mm) plywood.
          2.A minimum 7/16 inch (11 mm) OSB.
          3.1 by 4 nominal lumber.
4.All previous roofing materials shall be removed prior to installation of shingles.

D.Underlayment: A minimum of one layer shall be installed over the entire roof.

E.Eaves flashing shall be installed on eaves and gable ends where applicable.
1.Eaves flashing shall be either "D" style or "A" style roof edging. Provide "A" style on rakes.

          3.3INSTALLATION

A.Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Two methods of installation are available: straight, in which the exposure of each slate is kept consistent, and staggered, in which the exposure varies (usually by a maximum of 1 inch (25 mm)). Use the alignment indicator at the top of the slate to help manage the exposure. As you progress up the roof, be careful not to damage slates already in place. Put something, perhaps a cut slate, under toe irons (scaffolding brackets) to avoid scratching or marring the finish of the slate already installed below. Delete installation not required.

B.Straight Installation: Consistent exposure of between 6 inches (152 mm) and 7-1/2 inches (190 mm). Verify exposure with Architect.

C.Staggered Installation: Varied exposure of 1 inch (25 mm) between 6 inches (152 mm) and 7 inches (178 mm). Verify exposure with Architect.

D.Starter Row: Start with a row of shingles. The shingles shall extend approximately 1 inch (25 mm) over the eaves and 3/4 inch (19 mm) over the rakes. "D" style edging shall be used, if shingles are indicated to be laid flush.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Gable Ends/ Rakes: When approaching the end of a course, it's best to avoid cutting shingles if possible. If your roofing design will require different widths for your shingles it is recommended to vary the combination and spacing between the slates and predetermined your end pieces prior to actual installation. If cutting is required, slates should be cut so that the factory edge faces out on the gable end. Slates may be cut with a utility knife and straight edge or circular saw.

E.Use two nails per slate (in nailing location shown on the slates).
1.The shingles shall be flush with the starter shingles on the outer (rakes) and lower (eaves) edges. Provide 3/8 inch (19 mm) gap between shingles.
2.Nailing: Each shingle shall be fastened with two corrosion resistant 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) long nails with 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) diameter head.
3.The gap between two shingles in one course shall not line up less than 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) from the gap between two shingles on the course below.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** When or if shingles are installed during cool weather conditions, they may not seal until the conditions warm or the season changes. Shingles which do not receive direct sunlight or which are never exposed to adequate surface temperatures may never seal. This is not a manufacturing defect but the nature of the shingles under these circumstances.

F.Shingles are designed to self-seal and shall be subjected to direct warm sunlight for several days.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** NewTech recommends a closed valley system. Delete one of the following two options for valley construction.

G.Close Valley: Valley metal, broken in the middle and crimped on the outside edges, shall be provided as part of the closed valley system. Shingle shall be cut to fit flush with matching course on the opposite side. Wider slates shall be used as valley cuts to ensure that nailing is kept as far from centerline as possible (at least 5 inches (127 mm) from centerline).

H.Open Valley: Valley metal broken with a one-inch diverter in the middle and crimped on the outside edges shall be provided as part of the open valley system. Metal shall be broken with a diverter at least 1 inch (25 mm) tall. Shingles shall be cut 3 inches (76 mm) from centerline.

I.Flashings shall be used in all areas in which the roof abuts a vertical wall, dormer, chimney, skylight or other structural protrusion. Provide the step flashing method, extending 4 inches (102 mm) up vertical walls.

          3.4PROTECTION

A.Protect installed products until completion of project.

B.Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
