          1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE
 
          A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Company with minimum of 25 years experience in manufacturing asphalt shingle roofing and associated products specified in this section.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Preferred contractor classification is only required when offering Preferred Protection warranty. Delete if not required. Delete installer classification not required.
 
          B.Installer Minimum Qualifications:
          1.Installer shall be classified as a Preferred Contractor as defined and certified by Owens Corning.
          2.Installer shall be licensed or otherwise authorized by Owens Corning and/or all federal, state and local authorities to install all products specified in this section.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The following pre-installation meeting is suggested for all projects over 250 squares (2300 sm) total roofing. Delete if not required.
 
          C.Pre-Installation Meeting: Conduct a pre-installation meeting not more than 2 weeks after the start of the roofing project and before start of roofing installation.
          1.Contractor shall schedule and arrange meeting and meeting place and notify attendees.
          2.Mandatory Attendees: Roofing installer and manufacturer's steep slope technical representative (not sales agent).
          3.Optional Attendees: Owner's representative, Architect's representative, prime Contractor's representative.
          4.Review all pertinent requirements for achieving the warranty specified below and set schedule for final warranty inspection.
 
          1.6DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
 
          A.Store products in manufacturer's unopened labeled packaging until ready for installation.
 
          B.Store products in a covered, ventilated area, at temperature not more than 110 degrees F (43 degrees C); do not store near steam pipes, radiators, or in sunlight.
 
          C.Store bundles on flat surface to maximum height recommended by manufacturer; store rolls on end. Pallets may be double stacked if equalization plates are used.
 
          D.Store and dispose of solvent-based materials in accordance with all federal, state and local laws.

          2.8VENTILATION

          A.Ridge Vent:
          1.VentSure Rigid Roll Vent: 5/8 inch (16mm) profile rigid black plastic ridge roll specifically designed to improve the air flow in attics, crawlspaces and rafter bays where roof slope is between 2:12 and 20:12. For use in conjunction with eave / soffit intake and rafter ventilation products. Provides 12.5 sq inches (8065sqmm) of venting area (NFVA) per lineal foot.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Vent Width - Delete two of the next three paragraphs.
          a.Dimensions: 11 1/4 inches by 20 feet (286mm x 6096mm).

          B.Roof Louvers:
          1.VentSure Low Profile Slant Back Roof Vent with Exterior Louver: Metal vent designed to evacuate hot air. Each vent provides 72 sq inches (46451 sqmm) NFVA.
          2.VentSure High Profile Slant Back Roof Vent with Exterior Louver: Metal vent designed to evacuate hot air. Each vent provides 50 sq inches (32258 sqmm) NFVA.
          3.VentSure Plastic Slant Back Roof Vent with Interior Screen: Designed to evacuate hot air from attics. Each vent provides 61 sq inches (39355 sqmm) NFVA.
          4.VentSure Square Hood Roof Vent with Interior Screen: Metal vent designed to evacuate hot air from attics. Each vent provides 50 sq inches (32258 sqmm) NFVA.
          5.VentSure Metal Dome with Screen: High volume exhaust ventilator with a metal dome designed to evacuate hot air from attics. Each vent provides 144 sq inches (92903 sqmm) NFVA.
 
          C.Rafter Vents:
          1.Raft-R-Mate: attic rafter ventilation designed to provide space for air to travel from eaves to ridges where insulation is installed in rafter bays. Each piece is 22 1/2 inches wide by 48 inches long (572mm x 1219mm) and has a NFVA of 25.5 sq. inches or 12.75 sq. inches (16451sqmm / 8226sqmm) depending on rafter spacing.
 
          D.Intake Vents
          1.Intake vents already existing or to be installed by others shall have an equal NFVA as the exhaust vent specified.
 
          PART 3EXECUTION
 
          3.1EXAMINATION
 
          A.Do not begin installation of new roofing until roof deck has been properly prepared.
 
          B.If roof deck preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete the following article if the project is new construction or existing roofing will remain.
 
          3.2REMOVAL OF EXISTING ROOFING
 
          A.Remove all existing roofing down to the roof deck.
 
          B.Verify that deck is dry, sound, clean and smooth, free of depressions, waves, and projections.
 
          C.Repair all holes over 1 inch (25 mm) diameter and all cracks over 1/2 inch (12 mm) in width.
 
          D.Replace rotted or otherwise damaged decking with new materials of equal thickness.
 
          3.3PREPARATION
 
          A.Clean all work surfaces thoroughly prior to installation of underlayment.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete the following paragraph if not required.
 
          B.Install crickets on the upslope side of any chimney located on a roof steeper than 6:12, or wider than 24 inches (610 mm).
 
          C.Where practical, install all plumbing vents and other roof penetrations prior to installation of shingles.
 
          3.4UNDERLAYMENT INSTALLATION
 
          A.Install using methods recommended by manufacturer in accordance with local building code.
 
          B.Install leak barrier at the following locations:
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Leak barrier strongly recommended in all areas listed below. Delete areas not applicable or not required.
          1.Eaves: On all roofs with slope between 2:12 and 4:12, install leak barrier at least 24 inches (610 mm) beyond the interior face of the warm exterior wall.
          2.Valleys: Install a 36 inch (914mm) wide leak barrier centered on valley.
          3.Vent Pipes: Extend leak barrier at least 24 inches (610 mm) around all roof penetrations.
          4.Rake Edges: install leak barrier along the entire length of all rake edges prior to the installation of metal drip edges.
          5.Hips and Ridges: Install leak barrier along entire lengths. Cut slots where ridge vents are present to allow proper ventilation.
 
          C.Felt Underlayment:
          1.Install one layer of felt underlayment over all locations not covered with leak barrier. Run sheets horizontally and staple or nail in place.
          2.Where roof slope exceeds 4 in 12, horizontal laps shall be at least 2 inches (50 mm).
          3.Where roof slope is between 2 in 12 and 4 in 12, horizontal laps shall be at least 19 inches (480 mm.
 
          3.5SHINGLE INSTALLATION
 
          A.Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and requirements of local building code.
 
          B.Handle carefully during extreme weather to avoid damaging shingle edges.
 
          C.Secure using the appropriate number of fasteners for the shingle specified. If local building code requires additional fasteners they shall be placed such that fasteners and seams do not line up. Nails shall be long enough to penetrate through plywood or OSB decking, or at least 3/4 inch (19 mm) into dimensional lumber.
 
          D.Install hip and ridge shingles over all hips, ridges, or ridge vents.
 
          E.At all valleys, use only methods recommended for the type of shingle specified.
 
          F.Embed step flashings with every course of shingles at all sidewalls. "L" flashings are not acceptable.
 
          G.Flash all roof penetrations so moisture flows outward. Do not face-nail exposed metal.
 
          H.Follow ARMA and NRCA flashing guidelines where unique flashing conditions exist or methods are not specifically addressed in the application instructions.
 
          3.6VENTILATION Installation
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if no attic vents are specified.
 
          A.Ridge Vent:
          1.Cut continuous vent slot through sheathing, stopping 6 inches (150 mm) from each end of ridge.
          2.Cut opening at ridge 1 1/2 (36mm) to 2 inches (51 mm) wide, centered on ridge. Stop at least 6 inches (151mm) from rakes or valleys.
          3.Install ridge vent material full length of ridge, including uncut areas.
          4.Cover ridge vent with hip and ridge shingles as required by application instructions.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete the following paragraph if no roof louvers are specified.
 
          B.Roof Louvers:
          1.Cut hole in sheathing as necessary for the type of vent to be installed.
          2.Install according to manufacturers instructions for flashing vent penetrations
          3.Install eave vents in sufficient quantity to equal or exceed the exhaust vent area, calculated as specified by manufacturer.
 
          3.7Roof PROTECTION and Project close out
 
          A.Stage work progress to minimize foot traffic over completed sections of roofing.
 
          B.Where practical provide protection of installed materials from potential damage through work from other trades.
 
          C.Provide owner with an appropriate amount of contingency shingles for future modification or repair needs.
 
          3.8Inspection and Maintenance
 
          A.Inspect and clean all gutters and leaders annually.
 
          B.Inspect roof surfaces and flashings annually and perform maintenance as necessary.
 
          C.Inspect all areas where flashing cement has been applied annually and re-apply as necessary.
 
          D.Where repairs are necessary or roof fixtures are added, do not reuse shingles that are removed. Replace shingles with shingles of the same type and color.
