	1.4	SUBMITTALS

		B.	Installer Qualifications: Minimum five years documented experience installing products specified in this section and/or supervision by a manufacturers authorized installation representative.

	1.7	PROJECT CONDITIONS
		A.	Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
	1.8	SEQUENCING
		A.	Ensure that installer of this section is in possession of roof tile manufacturer's complete installation instructions before beginning construction activities of this section.
		B.	Maintain copy of manufacturer's complete installation instructions at project site.
	1.9	WARRANTY
		A.	Special Warranty: The Contractor warrants products of this section, as installed, to be in accord with the Contract Documents and free from faults and defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 3 years after completion.
		B.	Manufacturer's Warranty: Furnish roof tile manufacturer's 50-year warranty against defects in product workmanship and materials.
	1.10	EXTRA MATERIALS
		A.	Provide an additional 1 percent of installed roof tiles, but not less than one full square, for Owner's use in roof maintenance.
		B.	Furnish extra materials packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels clearly describing contents.

	2.3	UNDERLAYMENTS
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Underlayment is the most important accessory material and depends completely on the roof slope and weather conditions. Consult the manufacturer for underlayment recommendations for applications where slope is under 3/12.
		A.	Underlayment for Roof Slopes Under 3/12: Two layers of No. 15 asphalt saturated organic felt to meet requirements of ASTM D 226, Type 1 or equal at right angles to roof surface. Mop solidly (25 pounds per square) between layers and on top of layers with heated asphalt.
		B.	Underlayment for Roof Slopes of 3/12 and Over: One layer No. 30 asphalt saturated organic felt to meet requirements of ASTM D 226, Type 2 or equal. Lay with 4 inch (102 mm) head lap and 6 inch (152 mm) side lap.
	2.4	METAL FLASHINGS
		A.	General Requirements: Form flashings to profiles indicated on drawings, in accordance with manufacturer's printed instructions, and as recommended by SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual to protect materials from physical damage and to shed water.
			1.	Form flashing lengths square, accurate to profile, in maximum possible lengths; form flashing lengths free from distortion or defects detrimental to appearance or performance.
			2.	Hem edges of flashings exposed to view a minimum 1/4 inch on underside.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Metal flashing is required for all tile installations at eaves, valleys, wall intersections, and roof protrusions. Delete all but one of the following four flashing material paragraphs.
		B.	Eave Flashings and Other Metal Flashings: Copper sheet, ASTM B 370, cold rolled, natural finish; 16 ounces per square foot minimum thickness.
		C.	Eave Flashings and Other Metal Flashings: Copper sheet, ASTM B 370, cold rolled, natural finish; 20 ounces per square foot minimum thickness.
		D.	Eave Flashings and Other Metal Flashings: Stainless Steel Sheet for Flashings: ASTM A 666, Type 304 alloy, soft tempered; 24 gauge minimum thickness.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Galvanized steel is acceptable only in relatively dry areas, such as the Southwest, due to its limited life span.
		E.	Eave Flashings and Other Metal Flashings: 24 gage galvanized steel sheet, ASTM A 653, minimum G90/Z275 hot-dip zinc coating.
		F.	Sealant: Concealed sealant along gable rakes, ridge/hip trim and flashings shall be silicone sealant complying with ASTM C1002 of ASTM E42.
		G.	Plastic Cement: Non-running, heavy-duty plastic cement composed of asphalt and other mineral ingredients to meet requirements of ASTM D-2822 and federal specification SSC-153 (type 1).
		H.	Mortar: Mortar used under hip and ridge tile shall be ICBO Type M given in table No.24-A mortar proportions:
			1.	1 part Portland cement to 4 parts sand.
			2.	1 part Portland cement (or 1 masonry cement) to 2 1/4 to 3 parts of damp plaster sand.
			3.	Color: Add mineral oxide pigment to match color of roof tile.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete accessories that are not required from the following paragraphs.
	2.5	ACCESSORY MATERIALS
		A.	Nailing Strips: Softwood lumber preservative-treated under pressure; sized and located as specified.
		B.	Fasteners for Underlayment: 11 gauge, 3/8 inch diameter head by 7/8 inch long roofing nails of galvanized steel, copper or stainless steel.
		C.	Fasteners for Field Tile: 11 gauge non-corrosive nails of galvanized steel, copper, or stainless steel, of sufficient length to penetrate the wood nailing strip and wood sheathing at least 3/4 inch (19 mm). One nail each field tile.
		D.	Fasteners for Tile and Cleats: Copper or other approved non-corrosive nails, 11 gauge, large headed of sufficient length to give proper penetration.
		E.	Fasteners for Gypsum Plank and Nailable Concrete Decks: Stainless steel or silicone bronze screw shank nails of sufficient length to penetrate 1/2 and 3/4 their length into the deck. Do not penetrate underside of the deck. If deck material is very hard, use smooth shank nails.
		F.	Fasteners for Nailers: 5d nails of stainless steel or 16 gauge stainless steel staples of sufficient length to penetrate sheathing.
		G.	Fasteners for Metal Flashings: Ring-shank nails, 11 gage by 1 inch length, of same material as flashing metal (copper, stainless,, galvanized).
		H.	Snow Guard: Roof tile manufacturer's fabricated unit for protection over entrances, lower roof areas, or other areas where falling snow is not desired; fabricated from copper sheet, 38 ounces per square foot.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete grout if not specifying tile with grouted hips or tile with open valleys.
		I.	Grout: A mix of equal parts of factory-mixed mortar meeting requirements of ASTM C 387, Type N, and factory-mixed surface bonding mortar meeting requirements of ASTM C 887.
			1.	Add mineral oxide pigment made by roof tile manufacturer to match color of roof tile.
			2.	Add water and acrylic additive in accordance with mortar materials manufacturers' instructions to obtain correct mix for workability.
	PART 3	EXECUTION
	3.1	EXAMINATION
		A.	Verification roof deck structure meets roof tile manufacturer's installation requirements.
			1.	Verify roof penetrations are in place, adequately supported, and flashed to deck surface. Flashing shall be of copper or other approved flexible flashing material, and should be formed to match the contours of the tile.
			2.	Verify roof openings are correctly framed prior to installing Work of this section.
			3.	Verify deck is of sufficient thickness to accept fasteners.
			4.	Verify deck surfaces are dry, unfrozen, and free of ridges, warps, and voids
		B.	Gutters: Box gutters, hanging gutters, or inlaid gutters shall be in place with proper flashing prior to tile application. Flashing for these projections should extend 4 inches to 8 inches under the felt on the roof.
		C.	Installer's Examination: Examine condition of deck prior to installation. Notify Architect if conditions are unacceptable. Beginning construction activities of this section indicates installer's acceptance of conditions.
	3.2	PREPARATION
		A.	Broom clean deck surfaces prior to installation of underlayment. Cover knotholes with tin. Flatten down any protruding nails. Check for any loose uneven sheathing.
		B.	Check the square of the roof so that eave edge and ridge are parallel and gable line is parallel and perpendicular to the eave line.
		C.	Coordinate with installation of flashing, gutters, vents, skylights and other adjoining work to ensure proper sequencing. Do not install roofing materials until all vent stacks and other penetrations through roof sheathing have been installed and securely fastened.
		D.	Arrange three or more stacks of roof tile at installation area; mix tile from stacks as installation progresses for consistent color blend. Do not overload roof surface with staged materials.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete two of the following three paragraphs.
		E.	Roof Pitch Under 3/12: Tile should be used as a decorative material over a built-up roof covering in accordance with the local building code.
		F.	Roof Pitch of 3/12: Lay two layers No. 15 felt at right angles to roof surface. Nail to secure in place in accordance with the local building code. Mop solidly at 25 pounds per square between layers and on top of layers with hot asphalt. Double felt on the hips, valleys, and ridges. In areas subject to ice build-up, flash in accordance with local building code.
		G.	Roof Pitch Exceeding 3/12: Lay one layer No. 30 felt with 4 inch (102 mm) head lap and 6 inch (152 mm) end lap. Nail to secure in place in accordance with the local building code. Double felt on the hips, valleys, and ridges. In areas subject to ice build-up, flash in accordance with local building code.
	3.3	INSTALLATION
		A.	Install roof tile in accordance with shop drawings, manufacturer's printed installation instructions for specified project conditions, the NRCA Steep Slope Roofing Manual and SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual.
		B.	Valley Flashings:
			1.	Install minimum 24 inch (610 mm) wide flashing over full-width waterproofing membrane material; fasten metal to deck with cleats.
			2.	Overlap end joints minimum 5 inches (127 mm); do not solder joints.
			3.	Lap underlayment over edges of flashing 4 inches (102 mm).
			4.	When one slope is steeper than the other, crimp flashing to break the force of water delivered from the steeper slope to prevent it from driving under tile on the opposite side.
			5.	Form 1 inch (25 mm) high splash diverter rib in flashing at the flow line.
		C.	Intersections of Roof Surfaces and Abutting Vertical Surfaces:
			1.	Install continuous 12 inch (304 mm) wide strips of waterproof membrane material to extend 9 inches (228 mm) across roof deck and 6 inches (152 mm) up vertical surface.
			2.	Install continuous metal flashing to extend 6 inches (152 mm) up vertical surface; form metal flashing to extend minimum 3 inches (76 mm) over tile, and form 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) return hem at edge of metal.
			3.	Form saddle flashings for protrusions through roof in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
		D.	Vent Pipe Flashing:
			1.	Extend flashing a minimum of 6 inches (152 mm) under the course of tile immediately above vent. Fold top over 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) to prevent water from driving under the tiles.
			2.	Extend flashing under tiles on sides of vent a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) fold sides over 1/2 inch (12.7 mm).
			3.	At the lower edge extend flashing 4 (102 mm) over top of the tiles and turn under 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) for stiffness.
		E.	Counterflashings:
			1.	Install counterflashings tight to substrates, with top edge of counterflashing concealing base flashings; lap end joints minimum 4 inches.
			2.	Fasten counterflashings using specified fasteners; fasten on vertical surfaces only, at maximum spacing 12 inches on center.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete one of the following three paragraphs.
		F.	Fabricated Sheet Metal Items: Install in accordance with shop drawings and SMACNA ASMM.
		G.	Fabricated Sheet Metal Items: Comply with UBC Chapter 32.
		H.	Fabricated Sheet Metal Items: Installation is specified in Section 07600.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete two of the following three paragraphs.
		I.	Elevate fascia board to provide required angle for first course.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Rubber eave closure, below, is not used in conjunction with wood cant. It is used as a substitute for wood cant. Delete the wood cant strip at eave. Do not raise fascia board.
		J.	Install rubber eave closure to provide desired angle for first course. Install closure at eave line before first row of field tile is nailed to the roof deck. Allow for 1 inch (25 mm) to 3 inch (76 mm) tile overhang. Install closure one strip at a time, as tiles are laid. At valley, cut rubber to allow water flow without obstruction. Closure shall fit snugly into the arc of tiles. Drive 2 to 4 nails into each strip to penetrate rubber by 1/4 inch (6 mm), allowing tile to sit on rubber, not on nail. Penetrate decking to 50 percent of nail length. Do not use screws.
		K.	Eave Cant Strip: Install nominal 2 inch by 2 inches by 48 inches (25 mm by 50 mm by 1220 mm) pressure-treated wood cant strips at eaves, spacing 1 inch (25 mm) apart for drainage.
		L.	From the eave line moving towards the top of the roof, install a second nailer (1 inch x 2 inch) (25 mm x 51 mm) parallel to the first, with the desired overhang of tile at the eave line. All subsequent nailers will be nailed parallel to the eave line.
		M.	Chalk horizontal and vertical guidelines on felt underlayment to obtain proper exposures and centers for the tile installation. Follow the manufacturer's specifications for spacing and exposure. Measure tiles upon delivery to confirm chalk line spacing.
		N.	Nailers: Install nominal 1 inch by 2 inches by 48 inches (25 mm by 51 mm by 1220 mm) pressure-treated wood nailers directly over underlayment. Leave 1 inch (25 mm) spacing between nailers to allow for drainage.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Standard wood nailer size for hip and ridge tile is 2 inches x 6 inches but varies with pitch of the roof. Consult manufacturer for assistance.
		O.	On hips and ridges, apply wood nailers of size to carry hip and ridge tile.
	3.4	TILE INSTALLATION
		A.	Install tile roofing in strict conformance with manufacturer's instructions.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Overhang of tile at eaves should be not less than 3/4 inch (19 mm) and not more than 2 inches (51 mm). This dimension should be related to the size of gutters and should either be shown on the drawings or specified here.
		B.	Install first course over cant strip, with overhang of tile at the eave line.
			1.	Do not drive fasteners tightly against tiles, to reduce risk of breakage and to allow natural deck movement.
			2.	Allow tile to "hang" on its fasteners.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete one of the two subparagraphs below. The first is for normal conditions, the second for alpine conditions.
			3.	Provide 3/4 inch (19 mm) to 2 inches (51 mm) overhang, permitting proper flow into gutters.
			4.	Provide not more than 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) overhang, unless gutters are in place. If gutters are used, provide just enough overhang to permit proper flow into gutters; provide under-eave tile course or heavy-gage drip edge with extended hemmed lip to reinforce strength of overhang.
		C.	Install each tile course with joints centered on tile below. Align each tile with horizontal joints parallel to eaves, and vertical joints at right angles.
		D.	Remove all foreign materials from the interlocking ribs and grooves of tiles to assure uniform contact.
		E.	Wet cut tile at hips and valleys, using masonry saw with diamond blade.
		F.	At hip and ridge, and on mansard roofs, install bead of adhesive at butt end of each tile, located so it is completely concealed. Install sealant as required at hip and ridge accessories to achieve watertight installation.
		G.	Mortar: All hip and ridge tile units shall be set in solid bed of mortar and nailed. At no point shall cement mortar be exposed.
			1.	All tiles in contact with cement mortar should be immersed in water for two minutes before laying.
			2.	When hip starters and closed ridge end fittings are not specified, fill the voids at the ends of hips and ridges with mortar.
			3.	Provide ridge angle and hip/ridge terminals. Miter, nail, or wire them and fill voids with mortar.
			4.	Apply cement mortar to the area between the field tiles and ridge and hip tiles to completely seal area.
			5.	Mortar roof penetration flashing to roof tiles where required to maintain water resistance.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include the following paragraph for alpine conditions.
		H.	Install snow guards where shown and otherwise required by code.
	3.5	VISUAL INSPECTION
		A.	After installation of 100 to 150 tiles, conduct a visual inspection of the roof from ground level to ensure that tile courses follow straight lines and that tile is evenly color blended.
		B.	Repeat inspection at intervals throughout installation.
	3.6	PROTECTION
		A.	Do not permit traffic over finished roof surface unless absolutely necessary. If necessary, wear soft-soled shoes and walk on the "butt" of the tile in order to avoid breakage.
		B.	Replace tile broken due to improper protection or traffic control.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The following sample schedule may assist in establishing a schedule to identify locations of products in the project; coordinate with drawings. Delete entire Article if not required.
