The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association is an organization of Western Red Cedar producers, distributors and retailers throughout North America. Founded in 1954, the association is known worldwide as "the voice of the cedar industry". Its members account for more than 65 percent of the world's production of cedar and have an annual volume of nearly 1 billion board feet..
The mission of the WRCLA is to promote quality Western Red Cedar products and support them with a comprehensive marketing and PR program, technical services, education and training..The WRCLA works closely with architects, designers and builders to ensure the right product is specified and utilized for each project. The association offers extensive resources for including specification & installation guides and DVDs available in English, Spanish and Russian. The WRCLA has two education programs eligible for AIA Learning Credits. Its online architect training (www.cedar-training.org) course is eligible for 7 credit hours and the more informal group presentation offers 2 credit hours..The Association's RealCedar branding program promotes Western Red Cedar as the premier building material for naturally durable siding, decking and outdoor landscape features that will enhance the curb appeal of any home.           2.5QUALITY ASSURANCE
 
          A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Manufacturer shall be a member of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association capable of providing all Western Red Cedar siding materials specified in this section.
 
          B.Installer Qualifications:
          1.Installer shall have five (5) years experience installing cedar trim on the type and size of project specified by this section.
          2.Installer shall be licensed, registered or otherwise approved by the local jurisdiction to install Cedar Siding.
 
          C.Installation: Products shall be installed according to Western Red Cedar Lumber Association installation guidelines and adhere to local building codes.
 
          2.6DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
 
          A.Inspect the materials upon delivery to assure that specified products have been received.
 
          B.Store materials in safe area, away from construction traffic; store under cover and off ground, protected from moisture.
 
          C.Keep materials clearly separated and identified with grade marks legible. Keep damaged material identified as damaged and stored separately.
 
          2.7PROJECT CONDITIONS
 
          A.Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
 
          2.8SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS
 
          A.Fasteners, supports, and hangers shall be provided by manufacturers other than member organizations of the WRCLA, and conform to the requirements set forth by this section.

Stainless steel fasteners are preferred, hot-dipped galvanized is most widely used and economical. For most applications, No. 304 (18-8) grade stainless steel provides adequate corrosion resistance; for decks exposed to salt air, use No. 316 grade. Other types of fasteners, such as electro-plated, can rust, disintegrate and react adversely with the natural preservatives present in cedar, resulting in stains and streaks.

          A.Water repellant, fungus and mildew resistant penetrating stain that is resistant to Ultra Violet (UV) light. For solid colors, an alkyd oil primer is recommended. Top coats should be 100% Acrylic Latex.

          PART 4EXECUTION
 
          4.1PREPARATION
 
          A.Coordinate work with related trades; scribe and cope siding boards for accurate fit. Allow installation of related work to avoid cutting and patching.
 
          B.Select siding boards of longest possible lengths. Discard boards that are warped, twisted, bowed, crooked or otherwise defective.
 
          4.2INSTALLATION
 
          A.Follow installation instructions specified in the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association's Installing Cedar Siding publication and DVD.
 
          B.Installation must comply with local building codes and regulations.
 
          C.Finish materials on all sides and ends. Apply touch up coating on new cuts. Factory primed or finishing is preferred.
 
          4.3ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
 
          A.As work proceeds, maintain premises free of unnecessary accumulation of tools, equipment, surplus materials, and debris related to this work.
 
          4.4MAINTENANCE
 
          A.Explain proper maintenance procedures to owner or owner's representative at project closeout.
 
          B.Visually inspect siding, caulking, flashing annually for overall condition. Re-apply caulking and coating as necessary. Adjust flashing as required.
 
          C.The use of pressure washers is not recommended.
