QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
Manufacturer Qualifications: Firm with not less than 3 years documented experience in manufacturing of products similar in quality to those required for this project.

Installer Qualifications: Firm with not less than 3 years documented experience in the installation of products similar in quality to those required for this project.
C.
Quality Control: Manufacturer shall be ISO-9001:2008, certified and provide written confirmation that a formal Quality management System and Quality Processes have been adopted in the areas of, (but not limited to) Manufacturing, Quality Control and Customer Service for all processes, products and their components.

Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.

Pre-Construction Meeting: Conduct a pre-construction meeting with all parties and trades involved in the treatment of work at and around expansion joints including, but not limited to, concrete, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, landscaping, masonry, curtain wall, waterproofing, fire-stopping, caulking, flooring and other finish trade subcontractors.

All superintendents and foremen with responsibility for oversight and setting of the joint gap must attend this meeting.
2.
Coordinate and schedule all trades and ensure that all subcontractors understand their responsibilities in relation to expansion joints and that their work cannot impede anticipated structural movement at the expansion joints, or compromise the achievement of water tightness or life safety at expansion joints in any way.
1.6
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A.
Store products in manufacturer's unopened original, intact, labeled packaging until ready for installation.
B.
Handle and protect as necessary to prevent damage or deterioration during shipment, handling and storage. Store in accordance with manufacturer's installation instructions
C.
Store materials in heated, dry, enclosed area protected from the elements, wind, water, snow, and extreme temperatures.
D.
Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
1.7
SEQUENCING
A.
Ensure that shop drawings and other information required for preparation and installation of products of this section are furnished to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.
B.
Ensure that products of this section are supplied in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.
1.8
PROJECT CONDITIONS
A.
Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

2.1

2.2
PRODUCTS
A.
Provide sealant system products appropriate to the movement and design requirements at each joint location indicated on the Drawings and that meets this specification and the requirements of the sealant manufacturer.
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal Color Coreseal typical locations include, but are not limited to applications in window perimeters, other facade penetrations such as doors, store fronts, vents, HVAC units, panel to panel joints, curtain walls, control joints, between dissimilar materials, structural expansion joints, acoustic partition barriers, and new-to-existing connections. Silicone coating is available in a range of 26 standard colors.
 
B.
Preformed, Compressible Joint Sealant with Color Silicone Surface: Willseal Color Coreseal is a dense, closed cell foam typically used for larger movement joints. Willseal Color Coreseal has a colorized silicone skin on the exposed face that provides a chemically resistant, puncture resistant and waterproof joint. Provide where indicated for exterior and interior joints in walls above-grade.
1.
Compressible foam is a closed cell EVA cellular foam that is impermeable to water and capable of movements of plus or minus 25 percent (50 percent total) of nominal material size.
2.
Silicone external color facing is factory-applied to foam while uncompressed and cured at a width greater than the maximum expected joint opening. When compressed to final supplied dimension, a bellow(s) to handle movement must be created in the silicone coating.
3.
Provide silicone coating color(s) selected by the Architect.
4.
Provide factory fabricated 90 degree angles where indicated on the Drawings. Factory fabricated 90 degree angles contain minimum 12 inch long leg and 6 inch long leg, or custom leg as indicated on each side of the direction change.
5.
Provide with a lubricating sealant that facilitates installation and permanently bonds the Willseal Color Coreseal in place.
6.
Performance Requirements: Provide independent test report that products meet or exceed the following:
a.
Curtain wall performance tests ASTM E 330, ASTM E 283, and ASTM E 331. Product must meet or exceed hurricane-force wind loading with no deflection at both positive and negative pressures up to 4954 Pascals, equal to 200 mph winds (TAS 202/203)
b.
Products have an R-Value per 1 inch (25 mm) of depth of not less than 1.8 at as-installed nominal joint size compression when tested according to ASTM C 518.
c.
Product have an air permeability not to exceed 0.02 L/(s.m2) at 75 Pascals as required by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) when tested in accordance with ASTM E 283.
d.
VOC of the silicone must not exceed 40 grams/liter
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal Coreseal Typical locations include, but are not limited to the following: applications for joints where continuous or intermittent immersion or contact with chlorinated (up to 5 ppm), saline, or potable water is planned, construction, and structural expansion joints. Coreseal meets all applicable standards for compressible sealants and performs under extreme conditions n vertical and horizontal applications including bridge and parking structure type expansion joints. It provides a watertight, dust-proof, airtight, UV stable, chemically resistant, soundproof, and insulated primary seal. Once installed in the joint, the material adapts to the width of the joint and the irregularities of the substrate, provided such profile changes are not sudden or extreme.
 
C.
Watertight, Primary Seal for Horizontal and Vertical Applications: Coreseal closed cell sealant for above grade and submerged applications.
1.
Sealant system shall be comprised of two components:
a.
Cellular EVA foam supplied with or without a factory coated, chemically resistant, potable water safe silicone per NSF/ANSI Standard 61; NSF Standard 51, FDA Regulation CFR 177.2600; MIL-A-46146; and UL Flame Class 94 HB
b.
Field-applied epoxy.
2.
Standard sizes from 1/2 inch (12 mm) to 4 inches (150 mm).
3.
Performance Requirements: Provide independent test report that products meet or exceed the following:
a.
Capable of movements of plus or minus 25 percent (50 percent total) of nominal material size.
b.
Tensile strength 70 psi when tested in accordance with ASTM D 412 and a density of 2.5 per cubic foot when tested in accordance with ASTM E 575. Depth of seal shall be as recommended by manufacturer.
4.
Provide with manufacturer's standard field-applied epoxy adhesive.
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal 150 is a pre-compressed, self- expanding polyurethane foam joint sealant that is designed to seal against rain, wind, sound, draft, and dust. Unlike other conventional methods, and is not susceptible to breakdowns caused by excessive joint movements, joint strain, surface contamination, aging, and general tensile stress-caused failures. It does not dry out, shrink, or deteriorate. There's no mixing, no masking, no staining, and no mess. Willseal 150 can be installed under many weather and temperature conditions. It can be used in primary sealing applications or as a secondary sealant behind or in place of typical backer rod.
 
D.
Pre-Compressed, Self- Expanding Polyurethane Foam Joint Sealant: Willseal 150 preformed, pre-compressed polyurethane foam system impregnated with an acrylic based, flame-resistant, and weatherproofing sealant. Product is non-drying, non-shrinking, and self-expanding and is is supplied in stick or roll form.
1.
Performance Requirements: Provide independent test report that products meet or exceed the following:
a.
Standard for Pre-compressed Tapes: DIN 18542, passes all testing BG1 and BG2.
b.
Density: ASTM D 3574, 6 - 7 lb/ft 3 (90-110kg/m3).
c.
Thermal Conductivity: ASTM C 518, 0.28 - 0.30 Btu-in/hr-degrees F-ft2.
d.
Thermal Resistance, ASTM C 518, 3.3 - 3.5 hr-degrees F-ft2/Btu.
e.
Ideal Storage Temperature, 70 degrees F.
f.
Tensile Strength: ASTM D 3574. 21 psi minimum.
g.
Water Resistance: ASTM E 283, ASTM E 330, ASTM E 331, ASTM E 547, 12 psf minimum.
h.
ElongationASTM D 3574, 120 percent plus or minus 20 percent.
i.
Compression Set: ASTM D 3574, 4.2 percent maximum.
j.
Staining: DIN 18542, None.
k.
Bleeding: DIN 18542, None.
l.
Water resistant (driving rain) per DIN 18542: no penetration of water when compression is less than 35 percent of original foam thickness.
m.
Ultraviolet light resistant DIN 74069 (3 months lab exposure time).

Compatibility with conventional construction materials DIN 52423: No sign of corrosion were observed when in contact with zinc, steel, galvanized steel, aluminum and copper; no adverse effects with concrete, aerated concrete, brick, some natural stone, PVC, Plexiglas and wood.
2.
Cleaners or primers for substrates shall be approved by joint sealant manufacturer and substrate manufacturer.
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal 250 is a pre-compressed, self- expanding polyurethane foam joint sealant that is engineered to perform in primary horizontal applications that may be subject to solvents and fuels such as those found in parking garages, road and bridge joints, and airport runways. Designed to provide a maximum seal in structures with shear and rapid movement.
 
E.
Preformed, Compressible Joint Sealant with Traffic Grade Silicone Surface: Willseal 250 pre-compressed, self-expanding foam joint sealant with traffic grade silicone coating engineered to perform in primary horizontal applications that may be subject to solvents and fuels. Willseal 250 is a super resilient monolithic, micro-cell cross-linked polyurethane foam, with an impregnation of flame retardant, hydrophobic acrylic emulsion, and a factory applied coating of traffic grade silicone.
1.
Material shall be capable of movements of plus or minus 50 percent (100 percent total) of nominal material size depending on the anticipated movement of the joint design.
2.
Standard sizes available from 1/2 inch (25 mm) to 4-1/2 inches (112 mm). Depth of seal is 3 inches (76.2 mm) or 4 inches (100 mm) depending on joint dimension.
3.
Provide pre-compressed to less than the joint size, packaged in shrink-wrapped lengths (sticks) of 6.56 LF (2 M).
4.
Silicone coating is highway-grade, low-modulus, jet-fuel resistant silicone factory-applied to the foam while partially pre-compressed to a width greater than maximum joint extension and cured before final compression. When compressed to final supplied dimension, a bellow(s) to handle movement must be created in the silicone coating such that the joint is never under tension within its rated movement range. Silicone colors shall be as selected by the Architect.
5.
Provide factory fabricated 90 degree angles where indicated on the Drawings. Factory fabricated 90 degree angles contain minimum 12 inch long leg and 6 inch long leg, or custom leg as indicated on each side of the direction change.
6.
Provide with manufacturer's standard field-applied epoxy adhesive.
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal 600 is pre-compressed, self-expanding foam joint sealant designed to provide the ideal foundation for a large variety of wet sealants, such as silicone, polyurethane, polysulfide, and acrylic. Unlike conventional wet sealant and backer rod methods, Willseal 600 is not susceptible to breakdowns caused by excessive or rapid joint movements, protecting structures against rain, wind, dust, and sound. Willseal 600 is waterproof to a wind driven rain at 12.5 psf (70 mph) and is vapor permeable for use with air barrier system, cavity wall joint, and interior partition application.
 
F.
Self-Expanding Foam Joint Sealant: Willseal 600 is a pre-compressed, self-expanding foam joint sealant, engineered to perform as a highly flexible, weather-tight, primary or secondary seal in vertical exterior applications.
1.
Provide in Rolls or Stick Form as recommended by the manufacturer. Rolls shall be used when joint designs are up to 1-1/2 inches in width. Stick shall be used when joint design exceeds 1-3/4 inches. Both provided with a pressure sensitive adhesive on one flank of the joint filling material.
2.
Performance Requirements: Provide independent test report that products meet or exceed the following:
a.
Standard for Pre-compressed Tapes: DIN 18542, passes all testing BG1 and BG2.
b.
Density: ASTM D 3574, 5.5 - 6.5 lb/ft 3 (90-110kg/m3).
c.
Thermal Conductivity: ASTM C 518, 0.28 - 0.30 Btu-in/hr-degrees F-ft2.
d.
Thermal Resistance: ASTM C 518, 3 - 3.6 hr-degrees F-ft2/Btu.
e.
Ideal Storage Temperature: 70 degrees F.
f.
Tensile Strength: ASTM D E 574, 21 psi minimum.
g.
Water Resistance: ASTM E 283, ASTM E 330, ASTM E 331, ASTM E 547, 12 psf (600Pa - 70mph+ driving rain).
h.
Elongation: ASTM D 3574. 120 percent plus or minus 20 percent.
i.
Compression Set: ASTM D E 574, 4.2 percent maximum.
j.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal Seismic is pre-compressed, self-expanding tensionless joint sealant designed to provide watertight, energy-efficient, exterior and interior seismic joints (above-grade) including, but are not limited to the following: window perimeters, other facade penetrations such as doors, store fronts, vents, HVAC units, panel to panel joints, curtain walls, control joints, between dissimilar materials, high movement and seismic structural expansion joints, acoustic partition barriers, and retrofit applications. System shall perform waterproofing, expansion control functions as well as contribute to thermal insulation and sound attenuation as the result of a single installation.
 
G.
Preformed, Pre-Compressed, Self-Expanding, Tensionless, Sealant System: Willseal Seismic is a one-step primary sealant for exposed areas where color matching is important. It has a puncture resistant, elastomeric coating on the exterior surface, which can be factory colored to match most construction substrates or sealants. The joint is watertight and color matched.
1.
Preformed sealant shall be silicone or urethane coated, preformed, pre-compressed, self-expanding, sealant system.
a.
Expanding foam to be cellular foam impregnated with a hydrophobic, acrylic, waterproofing polymer with no un-bonded vertical laminations.
b.
Seal shall combine factory-applied, low-modulus silicone and a backing of acrylic-impregnated expanding foam into a unified, tensionless, sealant system.
c.
Material can be supplied with the sealant bellows on one or both sides of the joint system.
2.
Silicone external color facings to be low-modulus, waterproof silicone factory- applied to the foam while it is partially pre-compressed to a width greater than maximum joint extension and cured before final compression.
a.
When compressed to final supplied dimension, a bellow(s) to handle movement shall be created in the silicone coating.
b.
Silicone coatings are available in 26 standard colors for coordination with typical building materials.
c.
Colors shall be as selected by the Architect.
3.
Provide pre-compressed to less than the joint size, packaged in shrink-wrapped lengths (sticks) of 6.56 LF (2 M).
4.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal FR-2V & FR-3V are pre-compressed, self-expanding foam joint sealants designed to provide watertight, tensionless, energy-efficient, 2 or 3 hour fire rated, exterior and interior joints in vertical-plane walls (above-grade). Typical locations include applications for exterior wall joints and interior wall joints where a 2 or 3 hour fire rating is required or desired. System shall perform waterproofing, fire-rating, expansion control functions as well as contribute to thermal insulation and sound attenuation as the result of a single installation and without the addition of ancillary fire-blankets, mineral wool, cover plates, etc.
 
H.
Pre-Compressed, Self-Expanding Vertical 2 or 3 Hour Fire Rated Seal: Willseal FR-2V and Willseal FR-3V are second generation, unified fire rated, sound, energy, and waterproof sealant systems for vertical applications. Willseal FR-2V and FR-3V can be supplied for plus or minus 25 percent and plus or minus 50 percent joints depending on the UL listing.
1.
Sealant system consists of the following components:
a.
Fire-retardant-impregnated foam proven not to vertically delaminate and will fully extend without putting tension on the substrate.
b.
Pre-coated on the traffic surface with highway-grade, fuel resistant silicone proven not to de-bond or separate if exposed to thermal shock cycling.
c.
Field-applied epoxy or UL listed adhesive.
d.
Silicone fillet beads may be used where appropriate to prove a uniform seal with the substrate.
e.
Impregnated foam material shall not take a compression set over time.
f.
Sealant shall not rely on injected sealant bands along the substrate for sealing properties.
2.
Provide in Stick Form pre-compressed to less than the joint size and packaged in shrink-wrapped lengths (sticks) in lengths of 6.56 LF (2 M).
3.
Provide factory fabricated 90 degree angles where indicated on the Drawings. Factory fabricated 90 degree angles contain minimum 12 inch long leg and 6 inch long leg, or custom leg as indicated on each side of the direction change.
4.
Performance Requirements: Provide independent test report that products meet or exceed the following:
a.
Requirements of UL 2079, ASTM E 1966, ASTM E 119 and ASTM E 1399.
b.
Curtain wall performance tests ASTM E 330, ASTM E 283, and ASTM E 331. Product must meet or exceed hurricane-force wind loading with no deflection at both positive and negative pressures up to 4954 Pascals, equal to 200 mph winds (TAS 202/203)
5.
Cleaners or primers for substrates shall be approved by joint sealant manufacturer and substrate manufacturer.
 
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Willseal FR-2H & FR-3H are pre-compressed, self-expanding foam joint sealant designed to provide watertight, tensionless, energy-efficient, 2 or 3 hour fire rated, exterior and interior joints in horizontal (above-grade). Typical locations include applications for exterior wall joints and interior wall joints where a 2 or 3 hour fire rating is required or desired. System shall perform waterproofing, fire-rating, expansion control functions as well as contribute to thermal insulation and sound attenuation as the result of a single installation and without the addition of ancillary fire-blankets, mineral wool, cover plates, etc.
 
I.
Pre-Compressed, Self-Expanding Horizontal 2 & 3 Hour Fire Rated Seal: Willseal FR-2H and FR-3H are second generation, unified fire rated, sound, energy, and waterproof sealant system for horizontal applications. Willseal FR-2H & FR-3H can be supplied for plus or minus 25 percent and plus or minus 50 percent joints depending on the UL listing.
1.
Sealant system consists of the following components:
a.
Fire-retardant-impregnated foam proven not to vertically delaminate and will fully extend without putting tension on the substrate.
b.
Pre-coated on the traffic surface with highway-grade, fuel resistant silicone proven not to de-bond or separate if exposed to thermal shock cycling. Color as selected by the Architect.
c.
Field-applied epoxy or UL listed adhesive.
d.
Silicone fillet beads may be used where appropriate to prove a uniform seal with the substrate.
e.
Impregnated foam material shall not take a compression set over time.
f.
Sealant shall not rely on injected sealant bands along the substrate for sealing properties.
2.
Provide in Stick Form pre-compressed to less than the joint size and packaged in shrink-wrapped lengths (sticks) in lengths of 6.56 LF (2 M).
3.
Provide factory fabricated 90 degree angles where indicated on the Drawings. Factory fabricated 90 degree angles contain minimum 12 inch long leg and 6 inch long leg, or custom leg as indicated on each side of the direction change.
4.
Provide with manufacturer's standard field-applied epoxy adhesive.

PART 3 EXECUTION
 
3.1
EXAMINATION
A.
Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.
B.
Verify that expansion joint openings are properly formed and constructed to the exact dimensions and elevations indicated on the Drawings and recommended by the joint sealant manufacturer.
C.
If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
3.2
PREPARATION
A.
Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B.
Cleaners or primers for substrates shall be approved by joint sealant manufacturer and substrate manufacturer.
C.
Clean joint openings of all contaminants immediately prior to installation of expansion joint system. Repair spalled, irregular or unsound joint surfaces. Remove protruding roughness to ensure joint sides are smooth. Ensure sufficient depth to receive the material being installed.
D.
Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
3.3
INSTALLATION
A.
Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
3.4
PROTECTION
A.
Protect installed products until completion of project.
B.
Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
3.5
CLEANING
A.
After work is complete, clean exposed surfaces with a suitable cleaner.
