          PART 3EXECUTION

          3.1EXAMINATION

A.Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B.Examine substrates for suitability to receive Work. Uneven sub-floors may result in lipping of tiles and a poorly prepared subfloor may result in de-laminating and "druminess".

C.If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

          3.2PREPARATION

A.Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

B.Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

          C.Substrate Preparation:
1.Substrate must be clean, dry, smooth and leveled to a tolerance of no less than 1/8 inch in 10 feet (3 mm in 3 m).
2.Curing compounds, sealers and all existing mastics must be removed. Substrate should comply with appropriate standards.
3.Use membrane system or equivalent moisture control where necessary.
4.Fill all joints, construction seams and other irregularities with quality patching materials meeting industry standards.
5.Remove all contaminants including but not limited to grease, wax, oil, sealers, curing materials and old adhesives.

D.Provide expansion joints must be provided as noted in the Contract Documents.

E.Scour or shot-blast all concrete substrates prior to installation (patching or leveling materials included) to loosen dirt and remove weak surface layer and to reveal any cracking that may exist in the sub-floor.

F.All dust must be removed by sweeping and/or vacuum as required. Prime absorbent surfaces shall be primed prior to tiling.

G.Provision for subfloor movement must be made at the time of installation to minimize instances of floor tiles and joints cracking.

H.Seal concrete tile prior to installation using a sealer recommended by the manufacturer.

          3.3EXPANSION AND CONTROL JOINTS

A.Existing joints in concrete sub-floors must be carried through tile work and conform to Contract Drawings and appropriate standards.

B.Expansion joints must be raked or cut through the setting bed to the supporting slab or structure.

C.Install expansion joints where the tile abuts restraining surfaces and directly over cold or control joints in structural surfaces. Tile joints located directly over structural joints must be at least as wide as structural joint in question.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Retain the next paragraph only if interior installations are specified

D.Space interior expansion joints a maximum of 20 feet (6m) in all directions.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Retain the next paragraph only if exterior installations are specified

E.Space interior expansion joints a maximum of 15 feet (4.5m) in all directions.

          3.4TILE INSTALLATION

A.Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B.Prepare a premium quality factory-blended tile adhesive with a latex additive, to suit the site conditions and engineer's specification.. Mix according to the manufacturers recommendations.

C.Apply the adhesive with a notched trowel using only as much adhesive as can be covered with tiles within 20 to 30 minutes or while the surface is still sticky. Set tile to ensure full bedding and a true surface. Align tiles to show uniform joints and allow setting until firm.

D.Clean excess adhesive from the surface with a damp cloth or sponge while it is fresh. Avoid excess water in clean-up.

E.Allow two to three days after tiles are laid before grouting of joints. Grout joints must be free of all voids and pits. Once grout begins to dry, remove excess grout immediately using potable water and a stiff damp sponge. Avoid excess water in the clean up, as it will weaken the joint.

F.Tiles are delivered pre-sealed from factory but additional sealing with a penetrating sealer is recommended.

          3.5CLEAN-UP

A.Once mortar and grout have sufficiently cured, sweep the floor thoroughly to remove all loose grit particles.

B.Rinse the floor using abundant amounts of potable water. Remove water from the surface and allow the floor to dry thoroughly before sealing. Where necessary, sparingly use only neutral PH Detergents. Test detergent on a sample to verify compatibility and confirm that no hazing or clouding appears.

C.Remove marks or scratches with 400 or 500 grit wet sandpaper.

D.Rinse the floor thoroughly using liberal amounts of clear water. Remove water from the surface and allow the floor to dry thoroughly before sealing or buffing.

          3.6PROTECTION

A.Protect installed products until completion of project.

B.Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
