	1.4	SUBMITTALS
		A.	Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
		B.	Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:

		C.	Shop Drawings:
			1.	Indicate layout of floor, stone patterns, perimeter conditions, control and expansion joints, and setting details.

	1.5	QUALITY ASSURANCE
		A.	Quality Standard: Perform work in accordance with TCA Handbook instructions for installation methods specified.
		B.	Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in installing slate flooring of the type specified in this section, with not fewer than three years of documented experience.
		C.	Pre-Installation Meeting: Convene at project site not less than one week prior to commencing slate flooring installation, with attendance by all affected parties. Review installation procedures and coordination requirements.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.
		D.	Mock-Up:
			1.	Construct mock-up in area indicated by Architect, not less than 5 feet by 5 feet (1.5 m by 1.5 m), to serve as a standard of appearance and workmanship for the installation.
			2.	Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect.
			3.	Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

	1.6	DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
		A.	Handle slate to prevent chipping, breakage, soiling, or other damage.
		B.	Protect edges of slate with wood or other rigid materials.
		C.	Place and stack skids and slate flooring units to distribute weight evenly and to prevent breakage or cracking.
		D.	Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
	1.7	PROJECT CONDITIONS
		A.	Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
		B.	Provide sufficient heat and ventilation in areas where slate flooring installation is being performed to assure proper setting.
			1.	Take precautionary methods as necessary to prevent excessive temperature changes during installation.
			2.	Maintain environmental conditions for not less than 7 days after installation.

	2.4	MATERIALS
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** A cleavage membrane separates the mortar bed from the underlying structure by acting as a bond breaker. The advantage of this approach is that structural cracks are less likely to be transmitted through the finished flooring. ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Waterproofing membranes typically act as a cleavage membrane, whether or not they are intended to serve that purpose. ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete any of the following cleavage membranes not required for the project. If more than one type is required, modify the description of each type retained to include location.
		A.	Cleavage Membrane: ASTM D 226, Type I (No. 15) asphalt saturated felt.
		B.	Cleavage Membrane: ASTM D 4397 polyethylene sheeting, 4 mils (0.1 mm) thick.
		C.	Cleavage Membrane: Waterproofing membrane as specified in Division 7.
		D.	Mortar Bed Reinforcement: 2 by 2 in (50 by 50 mm) welded wire mesh, galvanized.
	2.5	MIXES
		A.	Portland Cement and Lime Setting Mortar: Comply with ASTM C 270, Proportion Specification, Type N for interior and Type S for exterior locations.
		B.	Joint Grout: Comply with mixing requirements of referenced ANSI standard.
	PART 3	EXECUTION
	3.1	EXAMINATION
		A.	Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.
		B.	If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
	3.2	PREPARATION
		A.	Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
		B.	Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete any installation types below not required for the project. If multiple installation types are required, modify descriptions of each to include location, or add schedule at the end of this section.
	3.3	GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
		A.	Lay stone in patterns indicated, maintaining uniform joint widths.
		B.	Use power saws to cut stone. Scribe and field-cut stone to fit at obstructions.
		C.	Keep expansion and control joints free of mortar or grout.
		D.	Sound test units after installation for complete bond. Replace units that sound hollow.
	3.4	THIN-SET INSTALLATION
	** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete setting and grouting system not required.
		A.	Install in accordance with TCA Handbook Method F113, with mortar bond coat over concrete.
		B.	Install in accordance with TCA Handbook Method F116, adhesive over concrete.
		C.	Install in accordance with TCA Handbook Method F122, over waterproofing membrane on concrete.
		D.	Install in accordance with TCA Handbook Method F144, with mortar bond coat over cementitious backer board on plywood.

	3.6	GROUTING AND SEALING
		A.	Allow slate flooring to set for a minimum of 48 hours before grouting and sealing.
		B.	Install grout in slate flooring joints to comply with ANSI A108.10 and manufacturer's written instructions.
		C.	Cure grout by maintaining in damp condition for not less than 7 days, unless otherwise recommended by manufacturer.
		D.	Install joint sealer at expansion and control joints, at penetrations, and as otherwise indicated.
	3.7	CLEANING
		A.	Clean slate flooring after setting, grouting, and sealing have been completed, using methods and materials as recommended by slate distributor.
	3.8	PROTECTION
		A.	Prohibit traffic over slate flooring for a minimum of 72 hours after installation.
		B.	Protect slate flooring during construction with heavy non-staining kraft paper.
	3.9	PROTECTION
		A.	Protect installed products until completion of project.
		B.	Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
