          B.Substitutions: Not permitted.

C.Requests for substitutions will be considered in accordance with provisions of Section 01600.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Use articles 2.2 through 2.7 to define the scope of painting if not fully defined in a Finish Schedule or on the drawings. These articles must be carefully edited to reflect the surfaces actually found on the project. In some cases, it may be enough to use the first paragraph that says, in effect, "paint everything" along with a list of items not to paint, without exhaustively defining all the different surfaces and items that must be painted. If the project involves repainting some but not all existing painted surfaces, be sure to indicate the extent of the repainting. The descriptions of each system can also be used to further refine the definition of what is to be painted, stained, or clear finished. Refer to Zinsser's Coating Selector Chart on www.zinsser.com/applications.asp for product recommendations by substrate. Delete items not required.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Coordinate primers specified in other Sections with undercoats and finish coats specified in this Section to ensure compatibility of materials. Some high-performance coatings will lift incompatible primers or have poor adhesion when applied over zinc-based or baked primers. Delete if not required. Delete if not required.
2.If a potential incompatibility of primers applied by others exists, obtain the following from the primer Applicator before proceeding:
a.Confirmation of primer's suitability for expected service conditions.
b.Confirmation of primer's ability to be top coated with materials specified.

          3.2PREPARATION
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete subparagraph and associated subparagraphs below if surfaces are not to be coated, or revise to suit Project.

A.General: Remove hardware and hardware accessories, plates, machined surfaces, lighting fixtures, and similar items already installed that are not to be painted. If removal is impractical or impossible because of size or weight of the item, provide surface-applied protection before surface preparation and painting.
1.After completing painting operations in each space or area, reinstall items removed using workers skilled in the trades involved.

B.Cleaning: Before applying paint or other surface treatments, clean substrates of substances that could impair bond of the various coatings. Remove oil and grease before cleaning.
1.Schedule cleaning and painting so dust and other contaminants from the cleaning process will not fall on wet, newly painted surfaces.

C.Surface Preparation: Clean and prepare surfaces to be painted according to manufacturer's written instructions for each particular substrate condition and as specified.
1.Previously Painted Surfaces: Patch all voids with the appropriate patching compounds (Ready Patch) or calking materials. Wash, scrape, sand and clean the surface to remove any chalk, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mildew, loose paint and other contaminants. Prime or spot prime with the appropriate Zinsser primer for the substrate.
2.Drywall/Plaster Unfinished (General Areas): Allow new drywall or plaster to properly cure before application of primer and finish coats. Patch all voids with the appropriate patching compounds (Ready Patch) or calking materials. Wash, scrape, sand and clean the surface to remove any chalk, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mildew, loose paint and other contaminants. Prime or spot prime with appropriate Zinsser primer for the substrate.
3.Provide barrier coats over incompatible primers or remove and reprime.
4.Provide barrier coats over incompatible primers or remove primers and reprime substrate.
5.Cementitious Substrates: Prepare concrete, brick, concrete masonry block, and cement plaster surfaces to be coated. Remove efflorescence, chalk, dust, dirt, grease, oils, and release agents. Roughen as required to remove glaze. If hardeners or sealers have been used to improve curing, use mechanical methods to prepare surfaces.
a.Use abrasive blast-cleaning methods if recommended by coating manufacturer.
b.Determine alkalinity and moisture content of surfaces by performing appropriate tests. If surfaces are sufficiently alkaline to cause the finish paint to blister and burn, correct this condition before application. Do not coat surfaces if moisture content exceeds that permitted in manufacturer's written instructions.
c.Cracks and joints shall be sealed with hydraulic cement and/or manufacturer's recommended sealant.
6.Wood Substrates: Clean surfaces of dirt, oil, and other foreign substances with scrapers, mineral spirits, and sandpaper, as required. Smoothly sand surfaces exposed to view and dust off.
a.Scrape and clean small, dry, seasoned knots, and apply a thin coat of white shellac or other recommended knot sealer, before applying primer.
b.Immediately on delivery, prime edges, ends, faces, undersides, and backsides of wood to be coated.
c.After priming, fill holes and imperfections in the finish surfaces with putty or plastic wood filler. Sand smooth when dried.
7.Ferrous-Metal Substrates: Clean ungalvanized ferrous-metal surfaces that have not been shop coated; remove oil, grease, dirt, loose mill scale, and other foreign substances. Use solvent or mechanical cleaning methods that comply with SSPC recommendations.
a.Blast-clean steel surfaces as recommended by coating manufacturer and according to SSPC-SP 10.
b.Treat bare and sandblasted or pickled clean metal with a metal treatment wash coat before priming.
c.Touch up bare areas and shop-applied prime coats that have been damaged. Wire brush, solvent clean, and touch up with same primer as the shop coat.
8.Nonferrous-Metal Substrates: Clean nonferrous and galvanized surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions for the type of service, metal substrate, and application required.
a.Remove pretreatment from galvanized sheet metal fabricated from coil stock by mechanical methods.

          3.3APPLICATION

A.Material Preparation: Carefully mix and prepare coating materials according to manufacturer's written instructions.
1.Maintain containers used in mixing and applying coatings in a clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue.
2.Stir materials before applying to produce a mixture of uniform density. Stir as required during application. Do not stir surface film into the material. Remove film and, if necessary, strain coating material before using.
3.Use only the type of thinners approved by manufacturer and only within recommended limits.
4.Tinting: Tint each undercoat a lighter shade to simplify identification of each coat when multiple coats of same material are applied. Tint undercoats to match the color of the finish coat, but provide sufficient differences in shade of undercoats to distinguish each separate coat.

B.General: Apply paint according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use applicators and techniques best suited for substrate and type of material being applied.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** High performance coatings only. Delete if not required.
