          1.5MOCK-UP
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of painting on the project.
 
          A.Finish all surfaces required to be painted in one room.

          B.Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
 
          1.7PROJECT CONDITIONS
 
          A.Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not apply coatings under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

          2.2APPLICATIONS/SCOPE
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Use this article to define the scope of painting if not fully defined in a Finish Schedule or on the drawings. This article must be carefully edited to reflect the surfaces actually found on the project. In some cases, it may be enough to use the first paragraph that says, in effect, "paint everything" along with a list of items not to paint, without exhaustively defining all the different surfaces and items that must be painted.

If the project involves repainting some but not all existing painted surfaces, be sure to indicated the extent of the repainting.

The descriptions of each system can also be used to further refine the definition of what is to be painted, stained, or clear finished.
 
          A.Scope: Use products specified in this section to finish ALL interior and exterior surfaces exposed to view, unless otherwise indicated; DO NOT PAINT THE FOLLOWING:
          1.Items specified or provided with factory finish; materials and products having factory-applied primers are not considered factory finished.
          2.Items indicated to receive other finishes.
          3.Items indicated to remain unfinished.
          4.Marble, granite, slate, and other natural stones.
          5.Brick, concrete, cast stone, integrally colored plaster.
          6.Glass.
          7.Concrete masonry in utility, mechanical, and electrical spaces.

          2.6MATERIALS - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
 
          A.Paints and Coatings - General:
          1.Unless otherwise indicated, provide factory-mixed coatings. When required, mix coatings to correct consistency in accordance with manufacturer's instructions before application. Do not reduce, thin, or dilute coatings or add materials to coatings unless such procedure is specifically described in manufacturer's product instructions.
          2.For opaque finishes, tint each coat including primer coat and intermediate coats, one-half shade lighter than succeeding coat, with final finish coat as base color.
          3.Supply each coating material in quantity required to complete entire project's work from a single production run.
 
          B.Primers: Where the manufacturer offers options on primers for a particular substrate, use primer categorized as "best" by the manufacturer.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The execution of backpriming of woodwork is usually specified in the woodwork section, although the materials may be specified here.
          1.Back Primer for Opaque-Finished Woodwork, Exterior: Same as finish coat.
          2.Back Primer for Transparent-Finished Woodwork: Same as finish coat.
 
          C.Coating Application Accessories: Provide all primers, sealers, cleaning agents, cleaning cloths, sanding materials, and clean-up materials required.
 
          PART 3EXECUTION
 
          3.1EXAMINATION
 
          A.Do not begin application of coatings until substrates have been properly prepared.
 
          B.If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
 
          3.2PREPARATION
 
          A.Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to coating application.
 
          B.Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
 
          C.Seal surfaces that might cause bleed-through or staining of topcoat.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The following is the least preparation that is valid for rusted steel. The paint manufacturer cannot recommend appropriate preparation because the extent of the corrosion and environmental conditions are unknown. If the steel is located outdoors or in a high humidity, chemical atmosphere, marine, or other corrosive environment, consider requiring much more stringent preparation in order to achieve long coating life. The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) (www.sspc.org) has lots of information on this subject.
 
          D.Prepare rusted steel surfaces using at least SSPC-PC 2 (hand tool cleaning) or SSPC-SP 3 (power tool cleaning) followed by SSPC-SP 1 (solvent cleaning).
 
          3.3INSTALLATION
 
          A.Stir coatings before and during application as recommended by manufacturer.
 
          B.Do not apply to wet or damp surfaces.
          1.Wait at least 30 days before applying to new concrete masonry.
          2.Test new concrete for moisture content.
          3.Wait until wood is fully dry after rain or morning fog or dew.
 
          C.Apply coatings using methods recommended by manufacturer.
 
          D.Apply coatings without runs, drips, or sags, without brush marks, and with consistent sheen.
 
          E.Apply coatings at spreading rate required to achieve the manufacturer's recommended film thickness.
 
          F.Dark Colors and Deep Clear Colors: Regardless of number of coats specified, apply as many coats as necessary for complete hide.
 
          G.Exterior Woodwork: If final painting must be delayed more than 2 weeks after installation of woodwork, apply primer within 2 weeks and final coating within 4 weeks.
 
          3.4PROTECTION
 
          A.Protect finished coatings until completion of project.
 
          B.Touch-up damaged coatings after Substantial Completion.
