All Banker wire fabrics are designed and manufactured in the most modern mill in the United States. With over 100 years of experience, Banker's engineering and tool making capabilities create a highly efficient and flexible weaving operation, which produces the highest quality materials.
The Banker Architectural product line is organized into four categories based on the scale of the weave: Large, Mid-fill, Fine, and Opaque. Woven wire mesh provides infinite possibilities for texture, reflectivity, and aesthetic appeal to any architectural space, interior or exterior.

A.Woven wire fabrics, mounting systems and support framing as indicated.

          1.2RELATED SECTIONS
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete any sections below not relevant to this project; add others as required.

          A.Section 05500 - Metal Fabrications: Supporting structure.

B.Section 05520 - Handrails and Railings: Railing infill supports.

          1.3SUBMITTALS

A.Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B.Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
          1.Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2.Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
          3.Installation methods.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** All raw wire shipments received by Banker Wire are accompanied by material certification sheets (Certs). These mill certifications are based on physical tests performed on the wire at time of manufacture (typically tensile) and chemical tests performed on the raw material at the time of melting. You should always request these certifications when your project has strict traceability requirements. Additional tests can be performed at additional cost. It is Banker's policy that if it is intended to do independent chemistry analysis before woven material is put into service, a mutually agreed upon testing service be chosen before manufacture of the material begins. We have a discipline of strict traceability, but we do rely on the veracity of the test reports furnished to us. Modern steel producers, because of the high price of metals such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum, are producing grades of material that are very near the lower limit of chemical acceptability. Because of unavoidable instrument calibration variations, it is possible that material that has been certified to be a certain grade, might test as unacceptable by a particular lab. If that should happen, considerable time and expense can be incurred attempting to determine the exact' chemical composition.

C.Material Certification: Provide material certification (Certs) for each alloy scheduled or required.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete selection samples if colors have already been selected.

D.Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two complete sets of color chips representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns.

E.Verification Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples, minimum size 5 by 7 inches (125 by 175 mm), representing actual product, color, and patterns.

          1.4QUALITY ASSURANCE
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Add qualifications. Delete if not required.

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Minimum 5 years manufacturing similar products.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Add qualifications. Delete if not required.

B.Installer Qualifications: Minimum 2 years experience installing similar products.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

C.Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.
          1.Finish areas designated by Architect.
2.Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect.
3.Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

          1.5DEFINITIONS

A.Apparent Percent Opening (APO): See Mesh Fundamentals.

B.Area Moment of Inertia: A property of a shape that is used to predict its resistance to bending and deflection.

C.Aspect Ratio (AR): See Mesh Fundamentals.

D.Asymmetric: For our purposes, any fabric that is woven with a flat top crimp style wire will have two surfaces with different textures - a front and a back, or a top and bottom.

E.Austenitic: Having a particular crystalline structure frequently associated with ferrous metals.

F.Crimp: The manner in which the wire is formed. See Crimp Styles.

G.Galvanize: To coat iron or steel with a layer of zinc.

H.Gauge: A numerical integer method of designating wire diameters. Many different gauges exist. To avoid confusion, use decimals of an inch or mm to designate wire diameter.

I.Heat Treat: To subject a specific material to controlled heating and cooling to change its physical characteristics.

J.Mesh to Diameter Ratio (MD): See Mesh Fundamentals.

K.Mesh Spacing, Mesh Count: Generally refers to the repeat pattern of the woven material. See Mesh Fundamentals.

L.Metallurgy: The general science of metals.

M.Mill Certs: Material certification documents. See Metallurgy.

N.Modulus of Elasticity: An elastic modulus, or modulus of elasticity, is the mathematical description of an object or substance's tendency to be deformed when a force is applied to it. For our purposes, when a light force is applied to a piece of wire, of same diameter and length, it will deflect differing amounts depending on material. Aluminum and copper based alloys will deflect approximately three times the amount of steel based alloys. Modulus is different from strength.

O.Opacity: The degree to which a particular mesh is opaque.

P.Patina: A chemical compound formed on the surface of metal.

Q.Percent Open Area: See Mesh Fundamentals.

R.Pickling: Immersing metals in a solution to remove surface scale and oxidation.

S.Scale: For our purposes, the ability to create larger or smaller weaves without changing any proportions or crimp styles.

T.Shute (or Fill Wires): Wires that lie perpendicular to the direction in which the fabric is being woven.

U.Stiffness: Resistance to deflection by an applied force. How firm, or, conversely, how springy does an object feel.

V.Strength: For our purposes, how much load will a piece of wire withstand before:
          1.Permanent bending (yield strength).
          2.Breaking (tensile strength).

W.Striation: A thin line or band, especially one or several that are close together.

X.Warp Wires: The wires that lie parallel to the direction in which the fabric is being woven.

          1.6DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

          1.7PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

          2.7MESH MATERIALS
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The logical choice for a wide variety of applications where excellent corrosion resistance under a wide variety of circumstances is desired. Delete if not required.

          A.Stainless Steel:
1.300 Series Stainless Steels: These alloys contain nickel in sufficient quantity to make them austenitic at room temperature. In the annealed condition, they are non-magnetic, but once work hardened they are slightly magnetic. These alloys are not heat treatable, but cold work increases the physical properties:
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The basic alloy of this group that is used for wire cloth manufacture. Nominally containing 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, it is sometimes referred to as 18-8. Maximum carbon content for this material is 0.08 percent. T304L (low carbon) contains a maximum of 0.03 percent carbon. Low carbon grades are often specified when there is fear that carbide precipitation will occur during welding.
          a.T304 stainless steel.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Molybdenum is added to the basic alloy to improve corrosion resistance to many acids and salts. There is much anecdotal evidence that suggests that increasing levels of acid rain and widespread use of salt compounds for de-icing demands that T316 stainless steel be used instead of T304 stainless steel.
          b.T316 stainless steel.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Other stainless alloys - There are myriad chemical compositions of stainless that are used for specialized applications including special corrosive or high temperature applications. Banker Wire can produce all alloys.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Typically a C1006 to C1012 alloy that is direct drawn from hot rolled rod. This material represents very good value and is widely used in applications where its weld-ability, strength and economy make it the material of choice. Delete if not required.

          B.Mild steel.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Steel is slightly more expensive than mild steel wire. This material has a very light coating of zinc applied to it during the manufacture of the wire. Absent any additional coating treatments, Banker Wire does not recommend the use of this material for any but the most mild, dry and indoor applications where corrosion conditions will be minimal. Delete if not required.

C.Galvanized Steel, galvanized before material is woven.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Conventional galvanized steel wire coating can be applied only in extremely light coating thicknesses because of a brittle layer that forms between the steel and the zinc. Heavier coating thicknesses that would yield better corrosion resistance will flake off during the weaving process. The addition of 5 percent aluminum to zinc dramatically increases the pound per pound corrosion resistance and, because there is no brittle interface layer, permits much heavier coating thicknesses to be applied. Galfan, a product of the Galfan Technology Center, Inc., and Bezinal, a product of Bekaert Corporation, are two such products. Preliminary salt spray testing has proved encouraging. We are proud that we are the first weaver to be stocking selected diameters of this material. Delete if not required.

          D.Zinc-5 percent Aluminum-Mischmetal.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** High Carbon steel is an abrasion-resistant steel used in any application where corrosion is not a problem but wear is. Its carbon content is typically at least 0.40 percent. This material is difficult to weld properly, and its use in applications requiring welding should be carefully considered. Delete if not required.

          E.High Carbon Steel.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Aluminum is a very versatile engineering and construction material. Its light weight, moderate cost and myriad surface treatment options make it a likely candidate for many architectural applications. Disadvantages include relatively low strength, and a modulus of elasticity only 1/3 when compared to steel and stainless. To maintain the required stiffness for a particular application, it is advisable to increase wire diameter somewhat. Multiple alloys are available. Consult our engineering department for recommendations. Delete if not required.

          F.Aluminum.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Copper - Since the Bronze Age, which preceded the Iron Age, thousands of copper based alloys have been developed. Unlike most metals, which when polished reflect the color of the light that illuminates them, copper based alloys have a distinctive red to yellow color that gives them a 'warm' feeling. Copper and bronze alloys are also well known for the wonderful patina that they develop under natural aging conditions. Delete if not required.

          G.Copper Based Alloy.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Nickel based alloys have as their primary constituent nickel, and 100's of specialty alloys are used. Primary alloying elements include Chromium, Molybdenum and copper. Special alloys are used for both high temperature and chemically corrosive applications. Banker Wire can produce material in all alloys. Delete if not required.

          H.Nickel Based Alloy.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Titanium, while most commonly associated with aerospace, has some outstanding corrosion resisting properties. Commercial grades typically used for weaving are grades 1 and 2. Delete if not required.

          I.Titanium.

          2.8MESH FINISHES
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** With the exception of the copper based alloys, the metals we weave (steel, stainless, aluminum), when highly polished, will exhibit specular reflection with little or no color shift from the illuminating source. In other words, the color of the metal is a function of the color of the light source. However, it should be noted that architectural fabrics produced from very smooth diamond drawn wires will, at times, exhibit subtle striations of varying degrees of light and dark. These are not defects, but rather, part of the natural beauty of the material. In order to achieve absolute color uniformity, post weaving treatments such as pickling and electro-polishing must be applied. It should be noted that these treatments can result in a look that resembles an overly retouched or enhanced photograph. Delete if not required.

          A.Reflectivity: Mechanical finish.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** While not a new technology, powder coating continues to develop new and improved products. If you want color and durability, you need to consider powder coating. A particularly effective combination for woven fabrics is Bezinal™ or Galfan® coated steel wire with powder paint finish. Banker, in collaboration with Payne Fence Co. has several commercial installations consisting of powder painted Galfan® that are showing no signs of corrosion after two years of service. Delete if not required.

          B.Powder Coating.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Anodizing is the formation of an aluminum oxide layer on the surface of aluminum. This surface is very hard, and, depending on layer thickness, very durable. In addition, a variety of coloring or staining techniques are available that give a broad range of colors, many retaining the metallic look of the base metal. Myriad architectural applications use anodized aluminum, and woven aluminum fabrics can be readily anodized. Delete if not required.

          C.Anodizing.

          2.9MESH FABRICATION
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The basic building block of our product is the nature in which various combinations of alloy, size, and shapes of metal are crimped. Delete crimping style not required or selected for weave pattern.

          A.Crimp Styles:
          1.Plain Crimp - PL:
a.Plain Crimp is a simple zigzag style of crimping with an intersection of two wires at every available pocket. When MD ratios are under 4:1, this style of crimping is usually the only practical style. Plain Crimp styles are most effective at MD ratios of 5:1 or less.
          2.Flat Top Crimp - FT:
a.Flat top is really a modified version of Lock Crimp, except that all the crimping is offset to one side of the material. The result is that the top surface of Flat Top presents a smooth surface with all the wire surfaces in a single plane. The bottom side has crimp bumps approximately twice the height of Lock Crimp bumps. Originally developed to present a smooth surface to material flow, or as a backer screen for finer mesh, Flat Top is also used extensively in architectural applications.
          3.Lock Crimp - LC:
a.Lock Crimp is a more modern and very versatile crimp style that has been largely overlooked for architectural applications. Unlike Plain Crimp, Lock Crimp is characterized by straight sections of wire connected by a well defined 'bump' at the wire intersections. Lock Crimp yields material with superb dimensional stability and has a clean look that many designers find visually appealing. Lock Crimp works well at practically any MD ratios of 4:1 and greater.
          4.Triple Shoot Crimp - TS:
a.Triple Shoot is a specialty crimp style that is generally always used in conjunction with another crimp style. It consists of relatively long sections of straight wire connected by groupings of three Plain Crimp pockets. The resulting material has rectangular openings of very high aspect ratio. Developed originally as a non-blinding sizing product, it also has interesting architectural properties.
          5.Intercrimp - I3, I5, I7 and similar:
a.While not really a fundamental crimp style, because of its widespread use, we choose to list it with other fundamental styles. Intercrimp is simply Plain Crimp except that wire intersections occur only at every 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc intersection. This type of weave is practical only at MD ratios of 6 or more, and is best suited for ratios of 8:1 or more. We designate this style of weave as 13, 15, 17 etc. Intercrimp was the first weave style that was produced in the late 19th century.
          6.Faux Cable - PS:
a.Faux Cable is a variant of the triple shoot crimp style, but instead of having the clusters of three closely space wires separated by a small space, Faux Cable has its clusters of wire (generally 2, 3 or 4) spaced tightly together with no gaps between adjacent wires. While some manufacturers produce this style of material by simply pressing groups of wires together, Banker places special crimps in the surface of the wire. This technique assures absolute repeatability in the mesh spacing and eliminates any problems associated with cumulative pitch variation. Cumulative pitch variation can result in aesthetic problems when attempting to align multiple panels. Our designation for this crimp style is PS.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Banker Wire also produces a great number of proprietary specialty crimp styles which include our multi-wire and embossed patterns. The basic building blocks can be combined and modified to produce millions of combinations. The box at left shows a few of the more common ones.
          7.Hybrid Crimp Styles:

          b.Lock Crimp / Plain.
          c.Flat Top / Plain.
          d.Triple Shoot / Plain.
          e.Triple Shoot / Lock Crimp.
