COMPANY OVERVIEW

Cambridge Architectural began with an architect's vision - an insight that perceived woven wire mesh as a unique and beautiful alternative to traditional designs. In 1958, Cambridge International produced a woven metal mesh to clad elevator interiors in the world-renowned Seagram Building in New York City. That first installation has lasted over 60 years, retaining its pristine look and condition.

In the years that followed, a partnership formed between architects and Cambridge, which realized the possibilities for architectural mesh were endless. By working with architects all over the world and being open to new and adventurous designs, the Cambridge team began developing a new vision to integrate woven metal mesh into the built environment.

The Architectural division was launched in 2002 as a natural off-shoot of the century-old woven metal mesh and belting manufacturer Cambridge International. With a foundation in quality American craftsmanship, the architectural division was able to flourish by offering tensile systems never before seen in the architectural design community.

Building on the visions of the architects, Cambridge architectural mesh systems adorn some impressive structures erected during the past decade including resorts, hospitals, theaters, and museums. Cambridge systems are American-made and manufactured by skilled craftsmen on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

As the benefits of working with metal mesh became apparent, so did the ease and simplicity of working with a full-service manufacturer and provider. When you work with Cambridge Architectural, our knowledgeable team walks you through the design process, step-by-step, bringing the architect's concept into reality. From the grand design to the smallest detail, Cambridge ensures assistance every step of the way.

Specializing in both interior and exterior applications, Cambridge Architectural is truly open to your ideas. The possibilities for design and function are boundless, limited only by the stretch of the imagination.

{{this.show}} {{this.hide}} Functions

Light Diffusion image

Light Diffusion

A variety of Cambridge architectural mesh patterns can provide various levels of light diffusion, creating a soft, consistent flow of light on walls, facades, ceilings and more. Each Cambridge woven metal fabric pattern - both open and closed - creates a distinct diffusion.

Cladding image

Cladding

Cambridge has been cladding elevators and walls since 1958, and is an expert in all forms of cladding. Walls, ceilings, building exteriors and more can be clad in flexible or rigid architectural mesh for a variety of functional needs. High-traffic areas are often clad with metal fabric because of its durability and upscale look.

Daylighting image

Daylighting

Cambridge architectural mesh reduces glare in various percentages, depending on the mesh pattern chosen, into the regularly occupied areas of a building. This improves the light quality inside the building and makes for a better environment. A shading device is also a requirement for those projects seeking the daylighting and views credits.

Acoustic Transparency image

Acoustic Transparency

The open-yet-closed nature of architectural mesh allows it to serve as a wall or ceiling while maintaining acoustic transparency. Cambridge architectural mesh systems have been used primarily in theaters, museums and offices to perform this function.

Forced Entry Protection image

Forced Entry Protection

Cambridge Architectural Forced Entry Protection Systems are the newest design in personnel protection systems, offering an open and welcoming aesthetic for building occupants while providing safety and security.

Certified by the U.S. Department of State, our defense systems resist forced entry into doors and windows, as outlined in SD-STD-01.01, Revision G. They are designed to meet or exceed the 5-minute protection level, allowing personnel to safely escape any dangerous situation.

It is clear today that any building can be an attack target, yet it may not be desirable to design the building to appear heavily protected. Cambridge Architectural Forced Entry Protection Systems give the best of both worlds - a robust defense with a modern, distinguished aesthetic.

Glare Reduction image

Glare Reduction

Cambridge architectural mesh systems reduce glare by shading harsh sunlight without impeding views.

Fall Protection image

Fall Protection

Cambridge architectural mesh systems provide user-friendly restraint, perfect for fall protection. Metal fabric will never shatter, will restrain a fall, and is capable of supporting a person's full weight - all while adding texture and interest to interior or exterior design.

Masking image

Masking

Cambridge Architectural mesh is commonly used to beautifully and effectively mask unsightly building components. The masking function is most commonly used for ceiling systems, where mesh panels hide ductwork and sprinkler systems. However, mesh can mask anything it needs to, while providing a clean, upscale aesthetic.

Missile Impact Protection image

Missile Impact Protection

Cambridge tensioned architectural mesh systems are virtually indestructible and have acquired a Miami-Dade County Certificate of Competency by passing small missile impact tests.

Privacy image

Privacy

The open-yet-closed nature of architectural mesh allows it to be lit so that it can only be looked through from one side - a key consideration for privacy function. Also, a mesh pattern with a very small open area can provide an aesthetic advantage and act as a visual barrier.

Safety and Security image

Safety and Security

The strength and open area of Cambridge Architectural metal fabric lends itself inherently to safety and security. Architectural mesh systems are virtually indestructible, can be tensioned to withstand hurricane-force winds, pass small missile impact tests, will easily support a person's full weight to restrain a fall, and can be lit so that they can only be looked through from one side.

Shading image

Shading

Cambridge architectural mesh can be used as a shading system, reducing solar heat gain. These systems can contribute to as many as four LEED points for optimized energy performance. Additionally, metal fabric reduces glare into the regularly occupied areas of a building as a contribution to daylighting and views credits.

Canopies

Stainless steel mesh canopies are designed to ensure maximum sun blockage while allowing air to pass through.

The interaction of the material with light varies, based on the openness of the mesh pattern. Closed, tight weaves can block illumination completely, while more open patterns pass varying degrees of light and heat.

Cambridge creates architectural mesh canopies to meet various design needs. Mesh panels may be installed horizontally overhead, parallel or an angle to the ground to allow for optimized shading. Long mesh panels are stretched between stainless steel cables which are integrated into the mesh panels to accommodate effective tensioning without any intermediate supports within the panels.

Cambridge canopies achieve an unparalleled aesthetic, featuring clean, cascading sections of metal fabric that form an impressive exterior design element. Architectural mesh is resistant to denting, scratches and corrosion, ultimately saving on costly repairs and replacements. With a lifecycle measured in decades, architectural mesh canopy systems are more beautiful and functional than traditional alternatives.

Cambridge Architectural mesh defense systems make a strong impression - literally.
Nowhere is this strength more evident than in coastal areas subject to hurricane-force winds.

Cambridge has specifically engineered patented attachment hardware for this environment meet the requirements of coastal areas, these mesh systems withstand wind gusts to 176 mph.

When confronted with high winds, Cambridge's Velocity attachment hardware releases tension on the mesh and then re-tension it automatically after conditions have passed. Attachment brackets have been modified for these systems to minimize structural stress on both the brackets and the building during high wind conditions. The system can also be specified to protect buildings from airborne debris in these conditions.

Velocity attachment hardware has acquired a Miami-Dade County Certificate of Competency by passing large missile impact tests.

The virtual indestructibility and lifecycle of Cambridge's metal fabric reduces maintenance costs, and assures that there will be no need for replacement materials, lending itself inherently to security and safety systems. Cambridge defense combines the elements of strength and design into one enduring and sustainable package.
