CERTIFICATION PROCESS

MRI equipment utilizes a strong magnetic field to generate images. To obtain the optimal performance the equipment needs minimal RF noise in the surrounding environment. The RF noise is frequencies of radio and magnetic waves which are measured in Decibel (dB) units. The critical frequency range for most MRI equipment is from 50 MHz to 150 MHz. To determine the Shielding Effectiveness (SE) a series of test are performed at different locations throughout the enclosure. These tests utilize specialized equipment to transmit and receive RF noise at a specified frequency in accordance to set of standards specified by the equipment vendor. To simplify the explanation of this process we will omit the technical details and focus on the general ideas behind the testing procedure. The test starts by placing a Transmit Antenna (TX) outside the enclosure that transmits a specified amount of RF noise (dB) at a specific frequency. Then the technician takes the Receive Antenna (RX) inside the enclosure and closes the door. The Shielding Effectiveness (SE) is then determined by the difference in dB once the door is closed. This difference in value is typically referred to as the shielding attenuation.

SPECS CATALOGS VIDEOS

Cryogen vent systems are an essential part to a MRI's functionality. MRI machines use liquid helium to cool down the superconductive magnet's coil. As cryogens are released to keep the magnet cool, they evaporate into odorless, colorless, and tasteless gases and must be vented safely out of the building with the use of a cryogen vent pipe.

We specialize in the supply and installation of these pipe systems. We are familiar with the different specifications of each magnet and can assist in the design calculations before the system is installed.

Shielding for Radiation comes in many available products and design characteristics, some being more effective than others. Radiation Shielding and Protection is a very serious subject. What follows is just a basic overview of what's available along with the variation of protection.

Attenuation or shielding of gamma radiation is an important component of radiation safety programs aiming to reduce personnel exposure to ionizing radiation. Attenuation data for commonly used shielding materials is available in many resources, such as the National Institute of Standards (NIST) XCOM database of attenuation. Ultimately, selecting the most appropriate shielding material for a given source of ionizing radiation will require knowledge of the source of radiation, application of attenuation data from available resources, and an understanding of the basic principles gamma ray interactions with matter. Also, other factors, such as cost and chemical compatibility must be considered. MarShield understands each shielding situation is unique and should be custom tailored to the specific project and applicatio

Lead remains the most commonly used material for radiation shielding but its toxicity is one of its major drawbacks. There has been significant advancement in the development of non-lead shielding material for the radiation shielding industry. Innovations have focused on producing thinner, more flexible, and effective non-lead shielding. Specifically, polymers are being utilized for their material properties and infused with tungsten and other metals to produce a new generation of shielding products.

In the medical field, many types of diagnostic imaging techniques are used to identify a medical condition in patients.

Diagnostic imaging
is a tool that doctors can utilize to “look inside" patients and there are many methods used to achieve this. Everything from ultrasounds to x-rays are used to produce 2D and 3D images that can be reviewed by medical professionals to make critical diagnoses. The imaging techniques that use radiation such as x-rays, radio frequencies, and gamma rays often require shielding to protect patients and healthcare workers as well as provide clear and accurate images.

An X-ray is produced by energy released from an accelerating electron and resulting radiation can pass through some, but not all material. The x-ray radiation then interacts with a detector and forms an image of the inside of an object or person. Because of the ability to “look through" materials that the human eye cannot see through, x-rays are used in a variety of industries including dental, non-destructive testing (NDT) and most importantly, the medical industry. While x-rays are a valuable diagnostic non-invasive tool with minimal risk to the patient, repeated long term exposure to x-rays can be harmful. Construction of hospitals and dental offices take steps to include radiation shielding that will reduce long term exposure from x-rays.

Lead lined cabinets are utilized across a wide variety of industries including
hospitals, nuclear medicine and the nuclear power industry. Some of the applications of shielded cabinets are for storing radioisotopes, radioactive waste, and providing shielding while operating x-ray tubes and protecting sensitive electronic devices from external radiation damage.

MarShield's shielded cabinets are custom manufactured, in steel or stainless steel, and lined with 1/32" to 2" or thicker lead. For shielding thicknesses less than 5/8", lead sheets are layered, while over 5/8", the lead is poured into the cabinet walls. Both methods provide seamless radiation protection.

The Nuclear industry often requires large radiation shields made primarily from lead. One common method is to pour lead into a steel fabrication. The metal shell protects the lead in a durable casing that holds up better over time. This also ensures that any risk of lead exposure is minimized as the lead is sealed in an outer casing. MarShield is a North American leader in nuclear lead pours and through this blog, we aim to highlight:

  • Some of the steps we use in producing a high-quality pour

  • Key considerations when designing a fabrication to be filled with lead for radiation shielding

Previous posts that I have written have mostly dealt with shielding gamma and neutron radiation, however there are other forms of radiation that should be shielded in certain situation. Radio Frequency (RF) waves are a form of electromagnetic waves produced by electronic devices and networks such as cell phones or radio towers. These waves can cause interference with other sensitive electronic devices. RF and electromagnetic waves can be shielded by enclosing an area with conductive material and electronically grounding the shield. This is also commonly known as a Faraday Cage. The effectiveness of the shield will depend on the material used, thickness of the material, and what frequency the waves that need to shield are.
