Hex Paver™ with Series™ finish in Peppered Granite, Crystalline and Basalt
The reimagined White Plains Library Plaza offers a welcoming place for people to gather with friends and family. Here they enjoy new green space with trees and native plants and explore the discovery garden with herb plantings, wind chimes and percussion instruments. Designed by IQ Landscape Architects, this roof deck plaza (over an underground garage) is divided into several outdoor rooms as an extension of the library. The pavers selected for the plaza invoke life and movement through the space with the subtle and durable architectural finish of Series™. The hexagonal City Park Paver™ in Peppered Granite and Crystalline Basalt create a playful, fluid design. At the center of the plaza, the 12" x 24" rectangle in Peppered Granite is grounded with an illuminated canopy structure creating a programmable space for special events. What was once a barren and unwelcoming space has been transformed into a destination, creating a park space in the middle of the city of White Plains, New York, for all to enjoy.
The Museum of Science and Industry, has great significance to the cultural background of Chicago and its people. Originally built in 1893 as the Palace for Fine Arts it was renamed in 1933 as the Museum of Science and Industry. The 400,000 square foot structure has been an inspiring destination for children and adults of all ages to pursue a larger vision in the fields of science, technology, medicine and engineering. In 2013, the museum was in need of a new parking lot. In response to localized stormwater and flooding, the city of Chicago implemented an initiative for green infrastructures on existing sites. This was the perfect application for permeable pavers. The parking lot was built with six drop off bays for buses, drive aisles and pedestrian walking and cross walks areas. The pedestrian areas were designed to contrast with exposed aggregate Onyx Black pavers in a slip resistant Series finish™. This project is a great example of permeable paver systems that perform extremely well in applications that range from pedestrian to heavy-duty; a new precedent for ecological design. Further informal research was done at this site to observe how snow reacts on permeable pavements following a snow event. Sometime snow events are followed by warm temperatures and then refreeze conditions that will lead to icy patches. This did not happen at this permeable pavement site.

French Grey, Charcoal and Special Order
W. Troy Street in Ferndale is home to a multi-use retail, parking and office development called The dot (the Development on Troy). The dot was proposed as a solution to meeting the demand for parking in downtown but accomplishes so much more. In addition to 4 levels of parking spaces, The dot brings new street-level retail accompanied by a streetscape plaza, fostering a sense of place in the heart of Ferndale.
The city's investment in the redesign of W. Troy Street allowed for the creation of a flexible, ‘shared street' that accommodates all types of road users including motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The designers also chose a curbless setting for the street, removing the typical separation of road use found on traditional streets. Instead, the distinct paver colors and bollards are what depict pedestrian use from vehicular use. These design elements allow the space to become a programmable outdoor plaza that can be used for community events, outdoor dining and shopping and everyday use.
Troy Street Plaza features landscaping with additional flowers and foliage, as well as unique decorative paving in a linear design. This design helps lead passersby toward the street-level retail and parking deck while delineating the traffic lanes through the use of a contrasting white color. Accomplished using Unilock plank pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, this paving design is able to withstand vehicular loads. However, not only did these pavers offer the required strength, but the Smooth Premier and Series™ finishes provided the durability. Manufactured using the advanced Enduracolor face-mix technology, these pavers have a long-lasting, non-fade surface that is perfect for this high traffic outdoor area. The final design created by the contrasting colors and finishes creates an eye-catching complement to the modern architecture of the building.
Eco-Line with Il Campo finish in Heritage Brown and Umbriano finish in Summer Wheat
Quincy Massachusetts is a large Coastal City, a suburb of Boston, and home to a population over 100,000 people. To bring more commuters into the city, Quincy built a 4-story garage with charging stations for electric cars that is accessible from 4 major roads downtown.
There is a large paved pedestrian area surrounding the garage, and gathering space between the garage and the apartment building beside it. This civic space has trees, benches, bike racks, shaded eating areas, and a central semi-covered structure to walk through or perform in. It is paved with permeable, heavy-duty Ecoline® pavers with Umbriano® finish in summer wheat and Il Campo® finish in Heritage Brown. The permeable pavers are an environmentally conscious choice as they allow for rapid penetration of stormwater runoff. Meanwhile, the contrasting colors and textures create aesthetically pleasing patterns that assist with the visibility and memorability of the space.
The development of the garage and the surrounding area goes beyond finding a parking solution. While the new garage enhances the usability, accessibility, and sustainability of the area and brings customers to the local businesses; the space around it offers an outdoor community hub for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Artline™ with Smooth Premier finish in Steel Mountain
Located In Brighton Massachusetts, The Charles River Speedway was originally built in 1899 as headquarters to support the new parkway along the Charles River. The parkway included a mile long horse and bicycle race track, which soon became one of the city's most popular spots to gather. Local architect, William D. Austin, designed the complex in the Shingle and Revival styles, with arched gable entrances, porches, double hung windows and elaborate wood trim. Over time the racetrack was replaced with Soldiers Field Road, park management offices relocated and the buildings fell into disrepair. In 2013 the city of Boston designated the Speedway complex as a Landmark and the Architectural Heritage Foundation was awarded a long-term lease to transform the site into a commercial and cultural gateway to Allston-Brighton and the Charles River.
The Klopfer Martin Design Group was hired to work with AHF to revitalize and preserve the historic complex. Artline™ pavers with Smooth Premier finish in Steel Mountain were used around the historic building to create gathering and seating areas and an accessible community courtyard outside the complex. The clean lines of the paver result in a modern paving design that both contrasts and complements the architecture of the 19th Century buildings. The EnduraColor™ and EasyClean™ technologies of the pavers ensure that the courtyard will remain beautiful despite heavy use and exposure to the elements. With the addition of picnic tables and large fabric shades to protect from the rain and sun, the area is once again a popular local gathering spot. The Charles River Speedway is now a thriving commercial complex supporting a diverse array of tenants from small retail shops and maker spaces, shared offices, a restaurant, cafe, as well as a taproom and brewery.
