Examine areas indicated to receive concrete paving slabs for compliance with requirements for installation tolerance and other conditions affecting performance for the following items before placing concrete paving slabs. a. Verify location, type, and elevations of edge restraints and penetrating items. b. Compare existing areas to the Drawings. c. Notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation in writing before proceeding. d. Verify all elevations, required pedestal heights and deck dimensions before commencing work. e. Setting of support pedestal units signifies acceptance of substrate and conditions affecting installation. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Protect drains, penetrations and adjacent construction from concrete paving slab installation. Verify penetrating and adjacent construction is complete and suitable for installation of concrete paving slabs. B. Clean and free projections and debris impairing the performance of the pedestals or the total system from the substrate. C. Establish accurate lines, levels and patterns. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. General: Install pedestals and concrete paving slabs in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, approved submittals and in proper relationship with adjacent construction. 1. Blend concrete paving slabs from multiple bundles during installation. 2. Joint widths between concrete paving slabs shall be uniform in appearance, with uniform grid lines. 3. Adjust paver and pedestal heights to level and flat surface, accounting for pitch of substrate for drainage. 4. Install additional pedestals for items such as planters, benches, and equipment as indicated on the shop drawings. 5. Cut concrete paving slabs with motor-driven masonry saw equipment only to provide clean, sharp, unchipped edges. Cut units to provide pattern indicated and to fit adjoining work neatly. Use full units without cutting where practical. Hammer cutting is not acceptable. 6. Remove any cracked or structurally damaged units and replace with new units. B. Installation Tolerances: Do not exceed plus-or-minus 1/16-inch unit-to-unit offset from flush (lippage) as included in ASTM C936. Do not exceed plus-or-minus 1/8 inch in 10 ft from level, or indicated slope, for finished surface of paving. C. Final Inspection: Unless otherwise specified in writing to allow for expansion, inspect to assure that all paver spacing between units and at perimeter containment does not exceed a tab width. Assure that pedestrian entry or access points to the concrete paving slabs are level and that surfaces are not randomly raised or uneven creating a tripping or safety hazard. Verify concrete paving slabs do not rock in place. 3.4 REPAIRING A. Repair: Remove and replace concrete paving slabs that are chipped, broken, stained, or otherwise damaged or that do not match adjoining units. Provide new units to match adjoining units and install in the same manner as original units, with same joint treatment and with no evidence of replacement. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Cleaning: Remove excess dirt, debris, stains, grit, etc. from exposed surfaces; wash and scrub clean in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions. B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion. C. Protect completed work from damage due to subsequent construction activity on the site until substantial completion of the project. END OF SECTION
