This specification includes high tolerance floor treatment Sure & Hard DP (J-17DP) which is a specialized formulation of a reactive water based siliconate solution. Sure & Hard DP (J-17DP) can be used on properly cured new concrete to protect and beatify or on old concrete to rejuvenate and add life to the floor. Sure & Hard DP (J-17DP) penetrates into and reacts with the concrete to harden dustproof and seal the concrete and allows for the surface to be highly polished with diamond polishing equipment.

B.Verify substrate surfaces are ready to receive work as instructed by coating manufacturer. Obtain and follow manufacturer's instructions for examination and testing of substrates.

C.If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Edit the following paragraphs for new concrete slabs or existing concrete slabs as required.

          3.2PREPARATION
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Newly placed concrete should be cured a minimum of 7 days. Wet curing is best; membrane forming curing compounds may also be used, but must be entirely removed prior to application. The manufacturer recommends a post cure using Dayton Sure & Hard J-17 after wet curing.

A.New Concrete Slabs: Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation. Concrete surface must be clean and dry prior to application.

          B.Existing Concrete Slabs:
1.Remove all oil, grease, dirt and previous coatings or sealers.
2.Concrete must be sound. Any loose, crumbly or deteriorated concrete must be removed and those areas repaired.
3.Cracks should be repaired and fully cured.
4.Variations in substrate texture and color will affect final appearance and should be corrected prior to application of sealer/hardener system and the polishing steps.

C.Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

D.If subgrade preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation. Do not begin work until unsatisfactory conditions have been rectified.

          3.3INSTALLATION

A.Install high tolerance sealer hardener and polishing floor treatment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B.Prior to installation the surface must be ground with the appropriate diamond grinding discs to level and open the floor surface.

C.After the initial grinding, the floor should be cleaned and allowed to dry.

D.Sure & Hard DP (J-17DP) shall be applied with low-pressure spray equipment, automatic scrubbers or can be poured directly onto the floor.

E.The floor should be completely saturated with material. Normally this will require a 1st coat application at the rate of 200 square feet per gallon (4.9 square meters per liter). The application rate may vary due to the porosity of the floor. More porous floors will require additional material.

F.After applying, the material shall be continuously broomed or worked with a floor scrubber with black pads for 15-20 minutes or until the material begins to gel. The floor must be kept wet with material while the scrubbing process is proceeding.

G.After scubbing is completed, all excess material on the surface should be thoroughly flushed from the floor. Polishing steps can then begin utilizing progressively higher grits of diamond polishing discs until the desired level of sheen is achieved.
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include the following paragraphs if a color finish is required. Delete if not required.

H.After the final grinding, prior to polishing, stains shall be applied to provide the desired aesthetic appearance.

I.After staining, apply an additional light final coat of Sure & Hard DP (J-17DP) at the rate of 400 - 600 square feet per gallon (9.8 - 14.7 square meters per liter) shall be applied prior to the last polishing steps.

J.The final coat shall be scrubbed well with a floor buffer and black abrasive pad working the material until it begins to gel (15-20 minutes) then flushed removing all residue from the surface. Do not allow residue to dry on the surface prior to flushing.

K.Allow this final coat at least 4 hours of drying prior to continuation of polishing using appropriate diamond pads depending on sheen level desired
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The following paragraphs applies to new concrete slabs and must be coordinated with Section 03300 Cast-In-Place Concrete to insure that similar tolerances are placed in the specification for the original placement of the concrete slab to be treated. Delete if not required.

          3.4TOLERANCES
** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The following paragraphs use a test procedure to determine relative F-Numbers utilizing traveling laser beam measuring method. Edit paragraphs as required. Delete if not required.

A.Measure for FF and FL tolerances for floors in accordance with ASTM E 1155, within 48 hours after slab installation. Finish concrete to achieve the following tolerances:
          1.Flatness: FF 40.
          2.Levelness: FL 30.

B.Correct slab surface when actual F or L number for floor installation measures less than required.

          3.5CLEANING
