| A. | Do not install in direct contact with concrete, masonry, or where water will accumulate. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.3 | INSTALLATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | Trim Installation: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Trim is a non-structural trim product and shall not be used where structural strength is required. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | Use round or clipped head, T-type or finish nails which are corrosion resistant. Nails shall penetrate at least 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) into framing. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. | Spiral or ring shank nails are acceptable. When using T-type or finish nails, counter sink and caulk. Do not use staples. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. | Nail trim starting from one end and progressing to the other end or beginning at the center and nailing toward either end. Each of these methods prevents built-in stresses in the trim which may cause warping or buckling. When applying corner trim, rake or band board trim, nails shall be positioned no more than 12 inches (305 mm) apart. Stagger nails along alternating edges, spacing them no farther than 24 inches (610 mm) apart along either edge. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 5. | Place nails no closer than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) from the edge of the trim. Maintain moderate contact or a slight gap at all joints - never spring or force fit trim into place. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Soffit Installation: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Engineered wood soffit panels are intended for continuous application over two or more spans. Place panel long edges perpendicular to the framing members. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | Spans up to 24 inches (610 mm) o.c. between framing members are acceptable. When soffit panels are applied to 24 inches (610 mm) o.c. framing, support at least one of the panel edges between the framing by using plowed fascia board, a nailer strip on the fascia or on the wall, or a trim board to support the soffit. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. | Soffit spans of 16 inches (406 mm) or less do not require edge support, but use of plowed fascia is recommended. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. | Use 6d corrosion-resistant nails for installing soffit. Do not use staples. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 5. | Place nails at least 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) from the edges and drive nails perpendicular to the face. Space nails no more than 12 inches (305 mm) o.c. Install with a 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch (1.5 mm to 3 mm) gap between panels. Butt joints shall fall on framing members or be blocked for support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. | Ceiling Panel Installation: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Engineered wood ceiling panels are intended for continuous application over two or more spans. Panel long edges should be perpendicular to the framing members. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | Spans up to 24 inches (610 mm) o.c. between framing members are acceptable. All panel edges shall be supported by and fastened to a framing member. Locate nails at least 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in from the panel edges and drive nails perpendicular to the face. Nail heads shall be spaced no wider than 6 inches (152 mm) o.c. at the perimeter and 12 inches (305 mm) o.c. on intermediate supports. Butt joints shall fall on framing members or be blocked for support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. | Leave a 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch (1.5 mm to 3 mm) gap between panels. A 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch (3 mm to 4.5 mm) gap shall be installed around all cutouts and where panels meet trim. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. | Use 6d corrosion-resistant nails for installing ceiling panels. Do not use staples. Nails shall penetrate a minimum of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) into the framing member. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.4 | FINISHES | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | All components of the Cornice System are wood products, and as such shall receive 2 coats of paint to enhance their beauty and extend their service life. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Preparation for Finishing: Install sealant wherever water can penetrate the wall or soffit assembly or accumulate behind trim. Overdriven or counter sunk nails, construction damage, and all openings shall be sealed with a paintable, mildew-resistant, acrylic latex sealant. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. | Primer: Product shall have a factory-applied primer. Use an exterior wood primer for touch-up priming where the substrate is exposed and for field-cut ends and edges. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| D. | Painting: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Use acrylic latex exterior house paint (flat, satin, or gloss) for the top coat, applied according to the paint manufacturer's label instructions. The following finishes are not recommended for use on trim: semitransparent stain, shake and shingle paints or vinyl acetate (PVA) paint. Do not use flat oil/alkyd finishes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | Apply two coats of field-applied, unthinned acrylic latex exterior paint (approximately 1.5 dry mils each) in addition to the factory-applied primer. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. | Apply one coat of oil/alkyd primer and one coat of unthinned acrylic latex exterior paint (approximately 1.5 dry mils each). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. | The field finishing must be completed within 90 days of installation. Failure to properly apply an adequate paint film within 90 days will void the product warranty. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.5 | PROTECTION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | Provide final protection and maintain conditions that ensure trim board construction without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
