          Temple-Inland's forest products business segment operates 19 plants and mills throughout the U.S. and in Canada.           PART 3EXECUTION
 
          3.1EXAMINATION
 
          A.Siding shall not be fastened to green or crooked structural framing members.
 
          B.Siding shall not be installed over rain-soaked or buckled sheathing materials.
 
          C.Examine areas and conditions under which Work of this Section will be performed. Correct conditions detrimental to timely and proper completion of Work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
 
          3.2INSTALLATION
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete installation for siding types not required.
 
          A.Install siding in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
 
          B.Nailing: Follow manufacturer's recommendations regarding nail types, sizes and spacing. Do not use staples.
          ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete installation for lap siding types not required.
 
          C.Lap siding shall be applied directly to studs or over sheathing as indicated. Stud spacing shall not be greater than 16 inches (406 mm) o.c. Lap siding shall not be used for mansard roofs. Lap siding shall not be used for wall bracing.
 
          D.Single-Board Lap:
          1.A starter strip approximately 1-1/2 inch 38 mm) wide and the same thickness as the siding shall be installed level with the bottom edge of the sill plate. Nail the starter strip with rust-resistant nails. Install the first course of siding at least 1/4 inch (6 mm), but no more than 1 inch (25 mm) below the starter strip. Nail the bottom edge of the first course of siding 16 inches (406 mm) o.c. and through the starter strip at each stud location. Maintain contact or a slight gap at all butt joints - never force-fit siding strips.
          2.The second and all succeeding courses of siding shall lap the previous course a minimum of 3/4 inches (19 mm). Locate nails 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) from the bottom edge. Nail through both lap siding courses and into each framing member. Nails shall penetrate studs at least 1-1/2 inches (38 mm).
          3.Fasten siding by nailing 16 inches (406 mm) o.c. Nailing shall progress from one end of the piece to the other, never from both ends toward the middle. Leave nail slightly above the surface. Do not set or over drive the nails, especially when siding is applied over soft material such as foam sheathing.
          4.Use formed metal corners or wood corner boards at outside and inside corner locations.
          5.Joints shall fall on the studs and be nailed on both top and bottom on each side of the joint.
          6.Offset the joints course-to-course. Allow at least 6 inches (152 mm) between the lower edge of the siding and the soil or wherever water may collect. Do not install siding so that it is in contact with concrete or masonry.
          7.Where the siding meets a finished roof, space at least 2 inches from the roofing material with proper wall-to-roof flashing.
          8.Install spacer strips for continuous horizontal support behind the siding wherever it is notched out above or below openings.
          9.Leave a 1/8 inch (3 mm ) to 3/16 inch (4.5 mm) gap between the siding and any window or door frames and any trim boards. Caulk gaps after the siding is installed and before painting.
 
          E.Multi-Board Lap:
          1.Corner details shall be the same as single-board lap.
          2.Carefully layout the number and location of nails to create consistent pattern.
          3.When installed diagonally, a nailable backing of plywood or OSB sheathing is required. Fastener spacing must be 16 inches (406 mm) o.c. or less. Butt joints shall be vertical over support framing.

          F.Square Edge Panel Siding:
          1.Square edge panels shall be applied to sheathed or unsheathed walls with studs spaced up to 24 inches o.c. All panel edges must be supported by and fastened to framing members. Locate nails at least 3/8 inch from the panel edges. Do not exceed the maximum nail spacing.
          2.Leave a 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch gap between panels. Apply sealant to joints and cover with narrow batten strips.
          3.Leave a 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch gap around all window and door openings and where panels meet trim.
 
          G.Shiplap Edge Panel Siding:
          1.Shiplap edge panels shall be applied to sheathed or unsheathed walls with stud spacing of 24 inches o.c. maximum. Start nailing at the joint side of the panel and progress to opposite edge to avoid wedging or preloading the shiplap joint.
          2.Leave a 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch gap between panels. Apply sealant to joints and cover with narrow batten strips. Nail through both panels as indicated.
          3.Leave a 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch gap around all window and door openings and where panels meet trim.
          4.When panels are installed as wall bracing, fasten both sides of the joint and space nails as indicated. Panels fastened directly to studs as structural wall bracing must be nailed 4 inches o.c. on edges and 8 inches o.c. on intermediate studs.
          5.Install stacked panels one above the other on a two story wall with a 1/4 inch space between the lower and upper panel to avoid preloading the butt joint. All horizontal butt joints shall be backed with supporting framing, flashed and sealed as shown.
 
          3.3FINISHES
 
          A.All components of the siding are wood products, and as such shall receive a coating of paint to enhance their beauty and extend their service life.
 
          B.Preparation for Finishing: Install sealant wherever water can penetrate the wall assembly or accumulate behind trim. Overdriven or counter sunk nails, construction damage, and all openings shall be sealed with a paintable, mildew-resistant, acrylic latex sealant.
 
          C.Primer: Use solvent-thinned oil/alkyd wood primer for touch-up priming where the substrate is exposed and for field-cut ends and edges.
 
          D.Painting:
          1.Use acrylic latex exterior house paint (flat, satin, or gloss) for the top coat, applied according to the paint manufacturer's label instructions. The following finishes are not recommended for use on siding: semitransparent stain, shake and shingle paints or vinyl acetate (PVA) paint. Do not use flat oil/alkyd finishes.

          2.Apply two coats of field-applied, unthinned acrylic latex exterior paint (approximately 1.5 dry mils each) in addition to the factory-applied primer.
          3.Apply one coat of oil/alkyd primer and one coat of unthinned acrylic latex exterior paint (approximately 1.5 dry mils each).
          4.The field finishing must be completed within 90 days of installation. Failure to properly apply an adequate paint film within 90 days will void the product warranty.
 
          3.4PROTECTION
 
          A.Provide final protection and maintain conditions that ensure siding construction without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.
