Why are EPDs important?
An EPD in construction can help to make buildings more efficient and less planet impactful. Having a epd certification shows the AEC community that the product is serious about making an difference.
How to get an environmental product declaration and certification?
Yes, the process is complicated and expense to most. But, there are folks that can help with every step of the building product certification process. These folks are linked below that will help you get an epd certification online.
The process for creating an environmental product declaration certification
Select an existing set of rules for your product category (PCR)
PCR, or product category rules define the product attributes that best define the product which differs from product to product.
If a PCR does not exist for your products, then one can be created.
Create and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The LCA defines then environmental impact of the product through the project's life span.
The LCA takes up to 12 months to create using an LCA consultant.
Populate the EPD format with data from the LCA
Either manufacturer's engineers or and outside consultant can turn the LCA into a EPD. Key rule - this is not where marketing speak or judgements reside. Just the facts, ma'am.
Verify the facts
This is done by an EPD Verification Consultant that has expertise relating to your product.
Last step - get the EPD out there so your products will change the world for the better!
Registering the EPD will likely be the easiest step of the process. Things you'll need will be a PDF of the EPD, a product photo, your logo, an optional XML version as well amongst other bits and bobs.
