In this episode, Cherise is joined by Jooyeol Oh, Principal at
MG2 Design in their Seattle Office. MG2 also has offices in Portland, Irvine, Minneapolis, Washington DC, New York, and Shanghai, China. They discuss the 6 Corners Lofts Project in Chicago, IL.
Located in Chicago’s Portage Park, the historic Sears building at 4714 W Irving Park Road has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally an Art Deco department store and warehouse that opened its doors in 1938, it closed in 2018, marking the end of an era. However, thanks to the visionary efforts of MG2, in collaboration with Colliers Engineering & Design and clients Novak Construction, this iconic structure has been reborn as the 6 Corners Lofts—a dynamic mixed-use development combining retail and residential spaces.

Project Name and Location: 6 Corners Lofts, Chicago, Illinois
MG2 is excited to announce they have joined Colliers Engineering & Design, a national multi-discipline engineering, architecture, design, and consulting firm.
When Sears opened its store at Six Corners on Oct. 20, 1938, more than 99,500 customers poured into the aisles.
MG2 has just completed 6 Corners Lofts in Chicago, converting that very Art Deco Sears store into mixed use—retail (Target) and multifamily residential.
- 6 Corners Lofts was formerly an Art Deco Sears department store and warehouse that opened in 1938 and closed in 2018.
- It is an adaptive reuse project, with an embodied carbon savings.
- The Art Deco feel is being preserved, yet modernized, by punching out windows and adding balconies to the residences.
- An additional structure that integrates seamlessly with the original building was added to increase the number of units.
- Every unit, from studios to two-level lofts, has access to the outside.
- There are 38-unit layouts to choose from. Something for everyone.
Poured terrazzo flooring, flared capital columns, and an electrical transformer vault, original to the building, have been restored or reimagined.
