The Cripe Lightning Rod Company, a predecessor company, was founded in the mid-1920's by Henry H. Cripe and his sons. The company manufactured, installed, and serviced lightning protection systems and began operations out of a barn located on the company's present facilities in Goshen, Indiana.
In 1934 during the Great Depression, son Earnest C. Cripe established Independent Protection Co., Inc. in Goshen, Indiana to manufacture and install lightning protection systems. Independent Protection Co. continues to be a leading manufacturer of structural lightning protection for industrial, commercial, residential, historical buildings and trees.
Today, the fourth and fifth generations of the Cripe family are actively involved in the business.

Mock-Up: Construct a mock-up with actual materials in sufficient time for Architect's review and to not delay construction progress. Locate mock-up as acceptable to Architect and provide temporary foundations and support.
The intent of a mock-up is to demonstrate quality of workmanship and visual appearance.
If the mock-up is not acceptable, rebuild the mock-up until satisfactory results are achieved.

PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE
Convene a conference approximately two weeks before scheduled commencement of the Work. Attendees shall include Architect, Contractor and trades involved. Agenda shall include schedule, responsibilities, critical path items and approvals.
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
Store and handle in strict compliance with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations.
Protect from damage due to weather, excessive temperature, and construction operations.
PROJECT CONDITIONS
Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's recommended limits.

Part No: G81. Cast bronze guard fastener for use with IP-591, 3/4 inch copper guard pipe. Bolt hole size is 5/16 inch diameter.
Guard Pipe:
Part No: 591. Copper guard pipe is 8' in length and 3/4 inch diameter. Fits standard cables through 2/0.

"U" Guard Fastener:
Part No: 135A. Galvanized steel fastener for use with IP-349 polyurethane "U" guard or 3/4 inch PVC. Not for use with copper guards.
"U" Guard Channel:
Part No: 349P. Preformed polyurethane "U" guard is 8 ft in length and may be painted to desired color. For cables through 2/0 size.

Bonding Wedge - 1 inch Conduit: Not UL listed.
Part No: 177. Cast bronze wedge is used when coursing cable through 1 inch diameter copper conduit. Wedges must be used to bond cable on each end of conduit.

EXECUTION
EXAMINATION
Do not begin installation until the substrates have been properly constructed and prepared.
If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect in writing of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
PREPARATION
Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
INSTALLATION
Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, approved submittals, and in proper relationship with adjacent construction.
Install according to UL 96A and/or NFPA 780.
Conductors: To have direct paths from air terminals to ground connections.
Avoid narrow loops and 8 inch radius bends less than 90 degrees.
Conceal within normal view from exterior locations at grade within 200 feet of building.
Concealed Installation Requirements: Comply with UL 96A.
Concealed Installation Requirements: Comply with UL 96A.
Install conduit where necessary. Comply with conductor concealment requirements.
Roof Penetrations: For down conductors or structural-steel framework connections; to be made using listed through-roof fitting and connector assemblies with solid rods and appropriate roof flashings.
Use materials approved by roofing manufacturer.
Ensure compatibility with the roofing specifications and warranty.
Ground Ring Electrode: Same size or larger than the main-size lightning conductor.
Connections:
Concealed Above Ground and in Earth or Concrete: Exothermic welds or listed high-compression fittings.
Exposed Above Ground: Listed.
Bolted, high compression, crimp, or exothermic weld.
Bonding Straps and Jumpers: In accessible locations for inspection and maintenance.
Bond straps directly to structure. Do not penetrate any adjacent parts.
Corrosion Protection: Use protective coatings where conditions may cause conductor corrosion.
Avoid electrolytic coupling of materials that will accelerate moisture corrosion.
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
Field Inspection: Coordinate field inspection in accordance with appropriate sections in Division 01.
Contract with a qualified inspector to perform inspections as required.
Obtain a UL Master Label for the system.
Obtain LPI certification for the system.
Submit inspection reports and certifications to the Owner or Owner's Representative.

Manufacturer's Services: Coordinate manufacturer's services in accordance with appropriate sections in Division 01.

Clean products in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
