Case Studies

In the renovation of an 80s-era ranch house in Petaluma, California, AZEK Exteriors' Class A flame-spread rated siding and trim and TimberTech's fire-resistant decking played crucial roles. Located in a wildland-urban interface, the house required materials that would be fire resistant while maintaining a stylish appearance. TimberTech's special-order Reserve Collection in Reclaimed Chestnut decking offered WUI compliance while AZEK's Board and Batten Siding and Trim provided fire resistance and durability, essential for meeting strict building codes. These products enhanced the home's aesthetic while transforming the property into a secure and inviting retreat.

Bangor, Maine, sits on the banks of the Penobscot River with a rich history tied closely to wood. Naturally, a new amphitheater and architectural jewel for the city should showcase the beauty of wood. But Maine weather extremes are tough on exterior hardwood.

The architect and client agreed that the look of premium wood was what the aesthetics of this venue needed but knew the ongoing maintenance of exterior hardwoods was not possible, given the realities of Maine's climate and the busy music season.

Fortunately, they discovered TimberTech Advanced PVC Cladding. TimberTech Cladding was a highly visible part of the design. In addition to the overall aesthetics, TimberTech contributed to the sustainability, acoustics, and weatherability of the structure.

Highland Park is a well-established and prestigious suburb on the North Shore of Chicago. Most of the homes are traditional in design with classic Georgian, Revival and Prairie architecture. A young family leaving a contemporary condo in the city decided to build a new home in Highland Park but wanted to bring a modern aesthetic to the project while still being good neighbors.

Minneapolis, Minnesota. Home to lakes, rivers and waterfalls; to minus-100-degree winters and scorching hot hundred-degree summers; and to a 1918 Spanish colonial home that Michael Anschel of OA Design+Build+Architecture was determined to rejuvenate. But, to bring the 102-year-old home into this century and keep it looking great for another 100 plus years was going to take a lot of work.

After nearly 170 years of upstate New York weather, time had taken its toll on the Calvary Episcopal Church. While proud of its designation on the National Register of Historic Places, the church board members were concerned about deterioration of the landmark bell tower. It was severely leaking into the building and there were concerns of collapse of both the tower and its 1000-pound bell.

Jim Nally, owner of Nally Restoration, had a proposal for saving their bell tower. The board liked what they heard but paused on one point—Jim was proposing covering the exterior of the structure not in wood but in PVC polymer sheet and trim from AZEK.

Families have been spending summers on Pentwater Lake for generations. Since 1935, the Pentwater Yacht Club has been a fixture in the community. Originally a waterfront 19th Century logging mill, the structure was approaching the end of its useful life. Club members were not looking for a new home, but the deterioration of their old structure due to water damage and the harsh Michigan weather made repairs cost-prohibitive. Once they decided to build new, they outlined priorities for the new building:

  • Commercial building performance

  • Home-like look that reflected the character of the old club.

  • One-story design with more outdoor space

  • Low maintenance to reflect the recreational nature of the club

  • Durability to support the club's good times for generations
