While living in Germany, Karl Baake Sr. worked as a tool-and-die maker. He wanted a way to protect lights from breaking or malfunctioning when flying sparks entered the work area. For years, he worked to perfect a design for a shatterproof work light. After emigrating to the US, Mr. Baake completed his design, founding KH Industries in 1960.
