Expansion Bearings

Fabreeka structural expansion bearings, or slide bearings, accommodate thermal expansion and structural rotation in buildings, bridges and pipe supports. Fabreeka designs and manufactures several types of expansion bearings for a wide range of applications, also including Teflon® bridge bearing pads. The expansion bearings are supplied as an upper and lower unit prepared to be tack or stitch welded in the field.

Fabreeka SBX type expansion bearings are used when construction tolerances, high load, and rotation are prominent with beam spans being excessive. This bearing is the most resilient in our full line of expansion bearings.

STX type slide bearings are used when construction tolerances and loads are moderate. This bearing has a very low coefficient of friction which is exceptional for use where expansion is large.

TTX type slide bearings are used as well when construction tolerances and loads are moderate. This bearing has a higher coefficient of friction than the STX Bearing and is used where the expansion criterion is limited.

Fabreeka slide bearings can be made with holes and slots, if required, to allow for mechanical attachment of expansion units to steel structures or for anchoring to concrete structures.

Fabreeka also offers GGX type expansion bearings made with graphite to achieve effective performance in high temperature environments.

Key Features/Benefits

  • Fabreeka SBX type structural expansion bearing is designed using Fabreeka-PTFE pad in the lower unit to accommodate large rotations and high reaction loads

  • SBX type bearings meet AASHTO and State DOT specifications for fabric reinforced bearings pads with PTFE sliding surface

  • TTX and STX type bearings can use a filled or unfilled PTFE surface as required

  • For corrosive conditions, SBX, STX and TTX type slide bearings are available in Stainless Steel

Pneumatic Isolation

Air spring isolators are another part of Fabreeka's portfolio. Bellows cylinder air springs, also known as rolling lobe isolators or airbag isolators, provide low frequency vibration isolation for applications requiring high dynamic vibration amplitudes and lifting heights.

Rubber air springs may have vertical and horizontal natural frequencies from 0.6 Hz, depending on operating height, and belted bellows cylinder design (single, double or pneumatic air bellows). Horizontal spring rate, that is the stiffness of the system, and stability also depend on operating height, so each air cushion type has an ideal operating height.

Key Features/Benefits

  • Natural frequencies from 0.6 Hz, depending on design

  • Virtually constant load-independent vertical natural frequency over a wide load range

  • Can support payloads from 7,700 to 69,300 lbs per isolator

  • Large usable stroke range

  • Resistant to most oils, alkaline or acidic cleaning agents, dust, dirt, ozone, UV radiation, general weathering

CATALOGSVIDEOSCERTIFICATIONS

Our Fabreeka® PLM air spring, or pneumatic isolation mounts, are low-frequency vibration and shock isolators to reduce unwanted vibration while leveling the devices they support.

When used as a vibration damper, the internal air chamber ensures significant isolating effects from as low as 5 Hz, as its natural frequency is only 3.0 Hz. PLM air spring elements also isolate while unpressurized. The vertical natural frequency of the elastomer body is around 10 Hz and will therefore isolate interfering frequencies above 14 Hz.

The ratio of vertical to horizontal natural frequency with Fabreeka's elastomer air spring is approximately 1:1 with high horizontal stability. The elastomer wall design in PLM air springs ensures large dynamic spring travel for applications vulnerable to shock and impact. External spacers / stops are advisable to prevent air spring strikethrough where low natural frequency of 3 Hz is still required.

The Fabreeka PLM pneumatic elastomeric mounts include a vulcanized threaded inlet for inflating the air springs, using either a Schrader valve or pneumatic screw attachment. No special connections are needed. Air springs with pneumatic screw connectors can be connected to the respective controlled air supply which eases pressurization and leveling.

Key Features/Benefits

  • While pressurized, Fabreeka PLM elastomer air springs will isolate frequencies from as low as 5 Hz

  • When pressurized, PLMs will isolate frequencies above 14 Hz

  • The ratio of vertical to horizontal natural frequency is approximately 1:1 with high horizontal stability

Precision Aire™ leveling PAL pneumatic isolator systems from Fabreeka provide superior low frequency vibration isolation using automatic leveling membrane air springs. PAL isolators are ideally suited for conditions requiring both height control and vibration isolation.

A complete Fabreeka-PAL pneumatic isolation system consists of at least three master isolators for three-point level control. Each isolator has an integrated level-control valve that functions as a load sensor and height control. Any number of additional isolators may be added to support the total device weight. Each system comes with a control unit, automatic level control valves, pneumatic tubing and all of the other pneumatic accessories necessary for complete system installation.

PAL air springs respond quickly to changes in load and center of gravity. Deviations from positions once preset are automatically readjusted. Air spring system performance is always a compromise between natural frequency (isolation), level control valve restoring accuracy and settling time.

Special isolators for low frequencies
The horizontal natural frequency of standard PAL air isolators is between 3.0 – 4.5 Hz. To achieve a lower natural frequency, Fabreeka designs special pendulum isolators which can achieve a natural frequency as low as 0.4 Hz. Pendulum air isolators for low frequency vibration isolation require an outer support frame and incorporate three cables or rods to allow the isolator to achieve the low stiffness in the horizontal direction (sway). The lengths of the cables or rods determine the horizontal natural frequency so height is the limiting factor on how low of a frequency that can be achieved.

Fabreeka also designs and manufactures air springs for OEM and special applications which can integrate easily into existing machine designs. Additionally, Fabreeka provides isolation systems for inertia mass isolation, suspended platforms and machine frames to improve stability, while also decreasing the relative height of the isolated device's center of gravity.

Key Features/Benefits

  • Standard PAL isolators have vertical natural frequencies from 1.5 to 2.7 Hz

  • Natural frequencies to 0.5 Hz can be achieved with custom designed isolators

  • Can support payloads from 120 to 100,000 lbs per isolator

  • Settling time is minimal at optimum damping and corresponding valve flow

Fabreeka pad is the original preformed fabric reinforced, elastomeric pad developed in 1936. The properties of the Fabreeka cotton duck pad are exceptionally suited for impact shock control, vibration isolation and structure-borne noise insulation. Fabreeka pad can be used as a bearing pad as well as for isolation washersbushings and OEM parts.

Fabreeka pad has been used for over 80 years for mounting heavy machinery where absorption of impact shock is required. Meeting or exceeding MIL-C-882 and MIL-E-5272 specifications, Fabreeka pad prevents cracking and flaking of concrete, eliminates the need for grout and prolongs the life of both machines and structures. Each preformed fabric pad made by Fabreeka is scientifically constructed to give years of service under the most severe operating conditions.

When considering vibration isolation, usually more than one disturbing frequency is present in a machine. As a general rule, an attempt should be made to isolate the frequency producing the largest vibration amplitude, while avoiding resonance with the other disturbing frequencies. Fabreeka's fabric reinforced elastomeric material, with its resilience, minimal deflection and high strength, often serves as a more practical vibration isolator than softer materials.

Very effective, flexible and tough
Fabreeka's part in isolating noise is one of reducing structure-borne noise. Fabreeka reduces mechanical vibrations which can be converted to air-borne noise. When isolating structure-borne noise, it is essential that all conductive paths of vibration be blocked. Therefore, Fabreeka pads, washers and bushings are required to completely break the metal-to-metal contact between the isolated unit and its support.

Fabreeka bearing pads were first used as a bridge bearing and are commonly used as a structural bearing element accommodating surface irregularity and rotations between load bearing faces. The preformed fabric pads can also be provided with a Teflon® surface for use in expansion bearings and pipe slides.

Depending upon the size and thickness, Fabreeka pad can ultimately withstand loads up to 10,000 psi. Normally, compressive stresses are designed not to exceed 2,000 psi to extend service life and reduce permanent set

Key Features/Benefits

  • Meets or exceeds MIL-C-882 and MIL-E-5272 specifications

  • Accommodates compressive loads up to 10,000 psi

  • Creep is limited to approximately 5% of the original pad thickness

  • Has a relatively high damping rate of 14% of critical

  • Impermeable to most oils and the effects of steam, water, mildew and brine

  • Effective temperature range is -65°F to 200°F

Much of the heavy equipment used to manufacture steel or to form metal is massive. When this equipment is in operation, heavy impacts in the form of shocks and vibrations are generated. The heavy equipment is often operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and shutdown for repairs results in reduced production and increased cost.

Plant operators and engineers concerned about heavy equipment vibration closely work with Fabreeka. The company has provided solutions for forge hammer isolation and the shock isolation of presses, namely forge presses, punch presses and stamping presses since 1953. Impact shock and vibration caused by heavy equipment also occurs in mining and when producing pulp and paper. Here, too, Fabreeka pads, washers and bushings have long been reliable solutions to reduce impact shock and vibration in a wide variety of operations.

Designing foundations supporting machine tools requires sound engineering procedures for a reliable result. An incorrectly designed foundation is extremely difficult to correct once installed. Consequently, many engineers use Fabreeka isolation materials and machine mounts, knowing that they provide vibration isolation and leveling for proper machine tool installation.

Fabreeka also provides solutions for applications when it is not desirable or feasible to mount a machine directly on vibration isolators. For example, installing vibration isolators on a machine whose frame or bed requires a stiff connection can cause bending, relative displacement or sagging and other problems, even when the floor is sufficiently rigid. For cases like this, Fabreeka recommends that the frame or bed is attached to a properly designed concrete foundation, which is then supported on appropriate isolators for the application.

Vibration and shock are common in every field of transportation. Whether commuters or travelers go by train, bus or by car, people are inevitably exposed to vibrations of considerable magnitude in vertical and lateral directions. The most affected people by vibration are the train engineers and bus drivers. To protect them and, more importantly, their passengers and to find suitable rail car isolation, design engineers work with Fabreeka to determine the isolation products which are ideal solutions to reduce impact and shock vibration.

Fabreeka products can also play an important role to prevent significant damages to the transported equipment and goods. As online commerce thrives and more and more goods are transported daily by trucks and railroad, vibration and shock loads are generated and protective solutions are in demand.
